Previews: Yayoi Kusama @ Tate Modern

AM was at Tate Modern on Tuesday to visit the major retrospective by Yayoi Kusama, whose separate show at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art we recently covered. The London exhibition is spread over fourteen rooms and features a selection of works — drawing, painting, collage, film, sculpture and installation — spanning a period of six decades. AM was at Tony’s Gallery in Shoreditch on Thursday to see the first UK solo show by Olek (set-up and teaser photos here). The New York-based artist has been making the most of her extended London visit, transforming the ground floor of the gallery into a domestic setting filled with crocheted furniture and other household items. We are AM are pretty excited about the prospects of attending David Shrigley’s first major survey exhibition in the UK, entitled Brain Activity, opening this Wednesday at the Hayward Gallery in London. Olek is launching her first UK solo show this evening at Tony’s Gallery in East London. The wall-to-floor installation recreates living quarters, complete with bed, tables, picture frames and other domestic objects — all covered in brightly-coloured crochet. AM has been keeping track of progress over the last few weeks and we’re looking forward to seeing the finished result. Following our earlier coverage largely restricted to original works at London Art Fair, AM is back with a selection of the limited edition prints and other multiples we spotted at Tuesday’s opening. On Tuesday, AM attended the opening of London Art Fair, an event that focuses on modern British and contemporary art, held at the Business Design Centre in Islington. In terms of overall presentation, the most attractive and cohesive booth for us this year is by London’s Hazlitt Holland-Hibbert, featuring works by Bridget Riley, Anthony Caro and Kenneth Armitage. Preview / Installation: Hush @ Onethirty3

While AM is cavorting artists, fellow bloggers, and industry friends at Art Basel Miami Week, the rest of the art world is not coming to a complete standstill. For example, later tonight, Dec. 1st, across the pond at Onethirty3, Hush (interviewed) will be unveiling a new installation at a new show that will include videos and photographs that document the first year of the gallery and project space. Last week, AM stopped by the Lazarides (Rathbone Place) gallery space in London as the Faile Collective (featured) unveiled a new body of work. For the last five and a half weeks, Gagosian Gallery on Britannia Street (the larger of its two spaces in London) has been hosting a Takashi Murakami exhibition (previewed). The show features five large-scale sculptures along with a group of paintings merging references to both Japanese contemporary society and the country’s artistic heritage.
