The 15th anniversary NuArt Festival in Stavanger, Norway, concluded early this month and by all accounts was a huge success. This latest edition of our Rewind article is headlined by a trailer for a new short film by JR (interviewed) starring Robert De Niro. Entitled Ellis, the footage follows the Academy Award Winning actor as he stars as an immigrant whose pursuit of a new life expired at Ellis Island. Traversing an abandoned hospital complex, De Niro is confronted with ghostly archival photographs of immigrants and hospital patients taken over a century ago pasted up by the JR, part of the French artist’s Unframed series of works. Tilt – “Panic Room” (Bogota)

Earlier this month, we brought you a look at the collaborative installation from Ludo & Rero in Columbia for the BARCU Arts and Culture Festival. Fans of street art and graffiti will also be pleased to know The House of Urban Art in Bogota curated by Fabien Castanier also featured work from Tilt. The French artist created a immersive installation entitled “Panic Room,” one his most iconic series of work with rooms where one side is completely covered in graffiti from wall to ceiling leading to a stunning contrasting aesthetic. Showing: Paul Wackers – “New Alphabet” @ Alice Gallery

New Alphabet, a solo from Paul Wackers will be showing through the rest of the week in Brussels at Alice Gallery. His imagery is almost collage-like in the way he puts together everyday objects, plants, and abstract shapes into one cohesive composition. Along with his signature color-filled paintings that can be seen as a modern take on still life portraits, he also produced some pieces that were in black and white. Streets: JR / Nuit Blanche (Toronto)

Earlier this month, this year’s Scotiabank Nuit Blanche opened up to the public in Toronto. One of the participating artists this year is French photogapher JR (interviewed) with several projects to engage his fans in Canada. Videos: Pharrell Visits Takashi Murakami

As we mentioned a couple months ago, Takashi Murakami will be unveiling his first solo exhibition in Japan in over 14 years on October 31st. Friend and collaborator Pharrell Williams recently paid a visit to the Japanese artist in his studio as he was prepping for the show at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo entitled The 500 Arhats. As you will see in the footage below, the highlight of the show will definitely be the massive 100 meter long painting. Discuss Takashi Murakami here.

Upcoming / Videos: Mel Kadel – “Sky’s Eyes” @ Slow Culture

On October 2nd, Slow Culture in Los Angeles will be presenting new works from Mel Kadel in a show entitled Sky’s Eyes. Known for her folk art inspired paintings featuring her recognizable female characters along with what must be penchant for patterns, the American artist has prepared at least 100 new pieces, which you can see stacked up in the video below. For the last several years, summer in Europe means a lot of street art festivals producing some amazing murals. Openings: Cleon Peterson – “Poison” @ Library Street Collective

Over the weekend, the Library Street Collective hosted the opening for a new show from Cleon Peterson in Detroit. Poison features new paintings featuring nightmarish scenes of violence and gore, nothing new to fans of the former assistant to Shepard Fairey.
