Showing: Candice Tripp & Wes Walker – “I’M NEVER SHOPPING HERE AGAIN!” @ Black Rat Projects

On view earlier this month at the Black Rat Projects in London was an interesting collaborative show from Candice Tripp (interviewed) and Giles Walker (known for his immersive robotic installations). IʼM NEVER SHOPPING HERE AGAIN included the surreal, dark paintings & sculptural pieces from Tripp as well as some animatronic magic from Walker. The exhibition was hard to capture with photos (although there are some for you to peruse below) so we have included a video to give you a better idea of what went down. Photo credit: Natasa Leoni. Streets: Risk, Meggs, Insa, Uglar, Echo – Abandoned Water Park Project

One of our contributing photographers in the past, Birdman, recently arranged for some artists to paint in an abandoned water park located somewhere in the Mojave Desert between California and Las Vegas. The project in association with VNA saw Risk, Meggs, Insa (along with some suicide girls decked out in Insa gear), Uglar, and Echo made their mark in and around the structures that exuded the aura of a failed American Dream. More photos from the can be seen in Issue 24 of Very Nearly Almost Magazine with some […]

Showing: Cai Guo-Qiang – “Falling Back to Earth” @ Gallery of Modern Art (Brisbane)

As you probably surmised from our comprehensive coverage of Cai Guo-Qiang’s exhibition in Los Angeles last year, we quite enjoy the Chinese artist’s explosive techniques and inventive installations. That’s why if you will be near Queensland in the coming months, you need to make time to stop by Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art. Although there are other works in the show like Head On, a stream of suspended wolves, the highlight of the show is a new installation piece entitled Heritage. Although the message of the piece featuring a […]

Openings: Riusuke Fukahori – “The Painted Breath” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Last month, the Joshua Liner Gallery in Chelsea presented all new works from Yokohama-based artist Riusuke Fukahori in his New York solo debut. The self-described goldfish fanatic keeps many of them around his studio for inspiration as well as considers them a metaphor for his life. Utilizing a resin technique that took over 8 years to perfect, the layered pieces almost look too real to be paintings, especially when presented in containers that are often associated with the fish in real life. Take a look at more photos as well […]

Rewind: Nov 4 – Dec 1

It’s time again for another Rewind feature here on AM. Leading things off is an amazing video, Limitless, shot and cut by Selina Miles featuring the art of Sofles, Fintan Magee, Treas, Quench. The crew go buckwild in in Brisbane right before the demolition of a massive warehouse and it was all documented by a creative timelapse video. Take a look below, you won’t regret it! Other notable videos: James Franco and Seth Rogen re-enact Kanye West’s new video. Dot Dot Dot in Los Angeles (via Nuart). Riusuke […]

Showing: Gaia – “Marshland” @ Rice Gallery

The prolific Baltimore and Brooklyn-based Gaia currently has big installation showing at the Rice University Art Gallery. For this project, the young artist did a series of interviews with people working at the university as well as gathered some information about the history of Houston. Through this research, he created his impression of “Houston’s sprawling urban landscape and increasingly international demographic,” and turned it into reality at the university gallery. By mixing different techniques and mediums, while using multiple layers of different images, he created an ensemble that features meticulously replicated […]

Dave Cooper x Johnny Ryan – “Pig Goat Banana Cricket” TV Series

The Canada-based Dave Cooper, who we last saw during a New York solo show, recently made the trip to Los Angeles to do more work on his recently green-lighted animated series with Nickelodeon. Pig Goat Banana Cricket was developed with Cooper in charge of art direction with Johnny Ryan writing for the children’s network, who have ordered 26 episodes to begin with. As you can see from the lush backgrounds and character design (better seen in pilot video below – note cricket exchanged for mantis), Cooper’s influence is definitely evident. […]
