Showing: Thomas Canto @ Vieux Panier Hotel

Thomas Canto recently created a futuristic installation inside of one of the rooms at the Vieux Panier Hotel in Marseilles. This small hotel is built in an old Corsican grocery shop, and it has five unique rooms, each designed in a different style by a contemporary artist for a period of one year. Titled “XL Room”, Canto’s abstract installation combines ropes and painted surfaces inside the space. Following the simple and clean black & white color scheme he is known for, this installation is the artist’s […]

Streets: 2501 x Pastel – “Mirrorless” Project (Miami)

Recently, we received final photos & video footage of an independent project that took place in Wynwood, Miami, during Art Basel Week last year. Initiated by the artists 2501 and Pastel, the Mirrorless project involves three crucial subjects – artist, home and people, that are actually the key elements of works through their interaction with the elements of the installation. By creating and installing artworks and mirror surfaces around four different buildings, the Italian-Argentinian art duo played with simple optical illusions that were created. The artists got their inspiration […]

Streets: GILF! – “Gentrification in Progress” (New York)

Since her performance art/installation piece “Define Progress” (video below) from the Surplus Candy group show a couple months ago, Brooklyn-based artist GILF! continues to raise awareness around the topic of gentrification in New York City. With the recent closing of the graffiti mecca 5Pointz in Long Island City, the murals that once graced the walls of the block long building was white washed as the precursor for demolition. Now the warehouse complex known for graffiti around the world for over two decades will house two high-rise […]

Upcoming: Geoff McFetridge @ V1 Gallery

On March 21st, Geoff McFetridge will be opening a new solo at V1 Gallery, his second with the Copenhagen showspace after a successful stint there in 2011 (covered). Because the Los Angeles -based artist is a man with many talents, we as art fans are glad to see him back in the studio, resulting in some pretty sweet paintings like the one seen above that will be part of the show. He only recently completed work on the Oscar-nominated film Her, where he designed the interfaces for […]

Openings: Allison Schulnik – “Eager” @ ZieherSmith

Last month, AM stopped by ZieherSmith in New York to take in the grotesque yet beautiful work of Allison Schulnik. Entitled Eager, the name of her newest stop-motion claymation film (which premiered on opening night), the exhibition featured paintings and sculptural works related to the film. Take a look at the video below as well as photos from the show and make plans to stop by if you are in NYC before it closes on February 22nd. http://vimeo.com/83390470 Discuss Allison Schulnik here.

Openings: JR x New York City Ballet (Part II)

As seen in our previous feature, artist JR worked both the inside and out of the New York City Ballet’s (NYCB) Lincoln Center home. Now, we give you and detailed look into the main lobby of the storied theater where the French photographer and street artist did what he does best and created an intricate yet massive photographic installation of his famous eye motif. Bringing together the performers of the ballet troupe, JR conducted a intimate photo shoot with the dancers as they worked their malleable bodies […]

Videos: David Cata Sews Portraits Into His Hand

David Cata is a multidisciplinary artist from Spain who recently created a series of works where he sewed portraits of people who have left a mark on his life into the palm of his hand. Overexposed Emotions is kind of an autobiographical diary featuring faces of family, friends, partners, teachers, and others interwoven into his body just like their lives have been interwoven his own. The process mimics interactions and possibilities in real life when dealing with others including “union, separation, pain and love.” Take a […]

Upcoming: Li Hongbo – “Tools Of Study” @ Klein Sun Gallery

During Art Basel Week in Miami, one of the artists that caught our attention was Li Hongbo and his flexible paper sculptures. Represented by the Klein Sun Gallery at Art Miami & CONTEXT, the Chinese artist and former book editor presented pieces that look like solid and often created in a classic style, yet when stretched, the entire concept that the viewer had of his work is flipped upside down. For those in New York who are interested, he’ll be opening a new show tonight at Klein Sun […]

Upcoming: Allison Schulnik – “Eager” @ ZieherSmith

Tomorrow, January 9th, ZieherSmith in New York will be presenting a new solo show from Allison Schulnik, her second with the gallery. The opening will mark the premiere of her latest stop-motion claymation film entitled Eager along with new related paintings, sculpture, and works on paper. If her some of her previous films (for example – Mound) are any indication, fans in NYC are in for a treat. Here is an intriguing description: “Haunting, hollow specters stretch, transmogrify and multiply as their synchronized shifts hint at ancient, […]

Basel Week Miami ’13: Daniel Arsham – “Future Relic”

One of the launch events during Art Basel Week was Future Relic by Daniel Arsham (seen above with artist DRx Romanelli). Presented by OHWOW Gallery, this event served to debut a collaborative film starring Daniel with fashion designer Richard Chai and features Ben Louis Nicholas as the director of photography and music created by Swiss Beats. This mysterious film draws visual language cues from Lawrence of Arabia and part one (seen below) sets up a journey where Arsham’s “future relics” are found. More parts of the film will […]
