Fame Festival: Blu

Unless you have been living under a rock somewhere, you have probably seen “Muto,” the now famous “graffiti-animation” video by Blu. Not sure if this new mural will be included in the new video the Italian artist is working on with David Ellis at the Fame Festival. Our guess would be no as this piece is meant to be a more permanent political statement on the massive steel factory ILVA in Taranto, and the fallout from all the pollution in the surrounding area. The images […]

Walrus TV: D*Face Interview

Walrus TV has released another excellent video recently.  This time, they feature a revealing interview with D*Face, where he talks about how it all started for him.  Haven’t seen a large body of work from him in a while since his Black Rat Press show and Hong Kong show last year, so this video will have to tide you over until his next solo in September at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. Discuss D*Face here.

Video: Ryan McGinness @ VA Museum of Fine Arts

Richmond’s Virgina Museum of Fine Arts is currently undergoing an expansion, scheduled to be completed by May 1, 2010. As part of that transformation, the VMFA has asked AM favorite Ryan McGinness (who last showed at Deitch) to create a large-scale, site-specific artwork based on the museum’s collection to greet visitors upon entering the museum.  Watch the above video to see a hard-hatted McGinness visit his work’s future home and discuss the ambitious project with VMFA curator John Ravenal.

Streets: Hugh Leeman – “Recognition” @ White Walls

At about two in the morning last Sunday, AM met up with Hugh Leeman in the heart of San Francisco’s seedy Tenderloin district as he was preparing for his upcoming show, “Recognition” at the esteemed White Walls Gallery.  For the past few months, San Franciscans have been greeted citywide by Leeman’s unique wheatpastes, each depicting a member of the local homeless population.  Leeman, who befriends and helps support his subjects, often times by giving away free clothing, has been embarking on a massive social street-level […]

A video of Lucy Mclauchlan working on her mural for this year’s FAME Festival has just been uploaded. With the nicely put together time-lapse, we can really see up close how much detail was put into this piece. Check out more coverage of this year’s festival in Italy here. Discuss the FAME Festival here.

Video: Hera – “I was asking myself…”

Hera of Herakut (interviewed) just posted this new video to her blog on Juxtapoz. She made it with Rusk of Maclaim. We love Hera here at AM and can hardly imagine a more artistic blog post. Discuss Hera here.

Update: Marilyn Minters MAC Collab, Studio Party, and Video

If you recall, we recently showed you the mural that Ai Yamaguchi did for a Shu Uemura store in SF. Continuing on the trend of collaborations between artists and cosmetic companies, Marilyn Minter joins Fafi in promoting the brand MAC, with a campaign starting in August. MAC’s bold and rich colors match up very well Minter’s flashy, gritty and glamorous style as you can see from her latest show at Salon 94 (covered). MAC also recently celebrated their upcoming ad campaign with a party at Minter’s […]

Video: Vhils – “Scratching The Surface”

AM has been very impressed by Vhils’ first UK solo show “Scratching The Surface“, which recently opened at Lazarides Rathbone Place. A video has just been released which documents the artist’s process of installation in the gallery. It’s great to see more footage of Alexandre taking his hammer and chisel to the wall to carve out his exquisite portraits. See the video here. Discuss this show here. Discuss Vhils here.

ABOVE (interviewed) continues his trip throughout Europe with a stop in Berlin, Germany, making his mark on the Berlin Wall a little over 20 years after Ronald Regan made his historic speech at Brandenburg Gate stating, “Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” Detailed photos and a video of ABOVE’s massive word/play piece and how he marked the anniversary of the bridge to this divide after the jump…
