Charity: “Artist Help Japan” Art Auction

Christina Conway, who if you remember curated the kokeshi show (covered), has again put her curatorial skills to work – this time to benefit the Japan relief efforts. Artists like Audrey Kawasaki, Yoskay Yamamoto, Jeni Yang, Allison Sommers and many more were asked to paint “Emas” – small wooden tablets left at Japanese shrines, usually with an image on one side and a handwritten wish or prayer on the other. One of the most exciting shows we’ve recalled writing about that takes place in New Hampshire is coming up. SugiPOP! is co-curated by Beau Basse of LeBasse Projects and will take up residence at the Portsmouth Museum of Art. It is an exhibition centered around Sugi (meaning “too much”), which is contemporary art inspired by anime, manga and comics. Friends and LA-based artists Edwin Ushiro’s (interviewed) and Yoskay Yamamoto (featured) made their way northwest to attend the opening of their latest joint show at the Roq La Rue a couple of weeks ago. Yoskay bought some works on a new medium for him – paper – as well as some sweet wood sculptures all entitled “lost stories and found memories”. After a great solo showing at LeBasse Projects, Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) is already hard at work for his coming show at Roq La Rue September 10th. Showing along side peer Edwin Ushiro (interviewed), Mr. Yamamoto is set to unleash a new set of images for Seattle’s finest. SDCC ’10: Yoskay Yamamoto – “Screaming For The Sunrise” Prototype

Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) has almost completed his latest vinyl project with Munky King. The incredible six-inch figure is based on his painting “Screaming for the Sunrise” from his “Hello & Goodbye” solo at LeBasse Projects last year. From what Yoskay told us, the reason it took over a year to design this figure is due to the intricate detailing that was demanded of the figure (i.e. the flames & snout).
