Entitled Electric Ritual, the currently showing selection of new paintings from Todd James is his third solo (see 2010, 2015) with Alice Gallery in Brussel. The vibrant new pieces from the New York-based artist continue his explorations of interiors while including some signature elements like his curvaceous nudes, war planes, and vivid color palette. Also included are some more abstract creations, with hints of shapes and forms from his familiar visual language. Discuss Todd “REAS” James here.

Amsterdam’s The Garage will be opening the European debut show from Mike Lee on the 29th of September. I’ve Missed You will be American artist’s first solo exhibition in Europe after successfully introducing his work in Tokyo (covered) and Hong Kong (covered) last year. We’ve been following Lee’s work since his early shows with Giant Robot (back in 2015), while he was still working with pencils on paper and are excited to see him taking over the art world with his cheerful monochromatic oils. Regularly depicting sphere-based […]

We’ve recently written a lot about what was happening in Stavanger during the 18th edition of Nuart Festival, but we wanted to give you a heads up on the background of two of the arguably most impactful projects that took place. Both murals created by artists that came from other parts of the globe, Australian Fintan Magee and Mexican Said Dokins, were the results of collaborations between the festival and local organizations focused on social inclusion. Dokins’ Næarhet (proximity/closeness) mural was directly inspired by the experiences […]

A few days after the official opening of Nuart 2018, we’re bringing you the final view of the new works produced for the 18th edition of the festival. The unprecedented lineup of 26 artists, two times more than their average over the years, included a significant number of stencil artists, a technique that has a special place in the heart and history of Norwegian art. As one of the most common and important mediums in Street Art, stencils have proven to be a strong tool in […]

Continuing to work with the POW! WOW! family, OG Slick recently finished a wall for this year’s event in Worcester, Massachusetts. The mural features a motif the Los Angeles-based artist has worked on in the past featuring his familiar Micky Mouse hands spray painting a smiley face. We’ll have more from POW! WOW! Worcester soon, but for now enjoy some more photos of the multi-story piece form Slick. Photo credit: @carlosmare, @smanzo36, @dickchuck77, @1ill510, @lannysphotos, and the artist. On September 28th, Quint Gallery in La Jolla will be opening a show from Kelsey Brookes entitled Fibonacci, Waveforms, and Capsid Symmetries. Continuing to draw from his scientific background as former biochemist for inspiration, the locally-used artist has found a novel way to present his geometric and patterned imagery by applying them to sculptural surfaces. Working in particular with the Fibonacci sequence and viral structures with this new body of work, these psychedelic wall mounted and free standing sculptures from Brookes have been in the works for most of this year. Discuss […]

Last week, Galerie Perrotin opened a solo show from Madsaki entitled French Fries with Mayo, the first time the Japanese artist has exhibited in Paris. On view are mostly pieces featuring his wife as his muse and pieces from his signature Wannabe series, crude imitations done in spray paint that initially can be be seen as critiques on masterworks from art history, but in actuality are his “attempts to use laughter and humor as both distraction and therapy for his internal turmoil.” To prepared for the exhibition, he […]

Tomorrow night (September 15th) in Los Angeles, Arcadia Contemporary will be presenting some recent paintings from John Brosio. The new body of work includes many of the locally-based artist’s suburban landscapes, tinged with surreal features in the background like dinosaurs, natural disasters, and the monsters – with unsuspecting people in the foreground going about their daily life. Brosio also intriguing injects some two dimensional elements into his imagery, such as trees that look like flat props or creatures that are nothing more than childlike drawings. Discuss John […]

Rowdy is perhaps best known for his crocodiles, which stalk the urban landscape with a quiet menace, and his cast of other characters which abound with abrasive energy. But the Bristol-based artist’s abstract landscapes, which can be read as both highly political but also deeply personal, represent a far more reflective and contemplative side to his work. An entire building is depicted by an individual mark such as the smudge of a fingerprint, the stroke of a paintbrush or the squirt from a spray-can and […]

Over the weekend, Soey Milk premiered Inflorescence, her second solo show (see 2015) to date with Corey Helford Gallery. The collection of over 20 paintings and drawings highlighted significant moments in Milk’s life. Those who attended the premiere may have felt a sense of familiarity with some of the crowd. This should not come as a surprise as the new body of work included portraits of many of her friends as well as herself. During a recent interview, she further explained – “If I’m working […]
