Over the weekend, the C.A.V.E. Gallery hosted the opening reception for Kid Acne’s (interviewed) newest solo entitled Stand & Deliver. The UK-based artist brought a selection of work to the Venice showspace featuring his “stabby women,” some of which was set against a backdrop of a patterned motif seen frequently in his street work. It looks like Escif was caught up with the Euro 2012 fever that had his home country in its grip as he painted this piece entitled The Rescue leading up to the final. After Spain was crowned the UEFA champion, the street artist turned his attention to more serious topics with a mural (seen below) dealing with the cuts the country has had implement as it becomes increasingly mired in the financial crisis of Europe. As protests mount in Japan over the decision to restart two nuclear reactors at the Oi power plant, Yoshitomo Nara has granted permission (via twitter) to his fans to make use of his NO NUKES girl image in support of the movement. The Japanese artist has said he wouldn’t mind photocopies of the piece from his 1998 book Slash with a Knife” and actually, a hi-res version has been made available here for download. Last week in New York, the Joshua Liner Gallery played host to artist and tattoo specialist Shawn Barber’s (interviewed) new solo – Memoir: The Tattooed Portraits Series. The new body of work features portraits of notables in the body inking subculture (many of them the painter’s close friends) as well works featuring various selections of tattoo paraphernalia. Opening on July 4th, America’s Independence Day, Letters From America at Black Rat Projects will bring work from US artists SABER, RISK, Ron English, and TrustoCorp to the UK. Legendary artist David Lynch recently got together with Dom Pérignon for a collaborative project. The American filmmaker, television director, visual artist, musician, and actor designed some limited versions of the Champagne brand’s bottles along with the packaging featuring the theme of flickering lights. Versatile artist David Ellis recently turned the Pearl Street Triangle, a pedestrian plaza in Brooklyn, into a canvas for his a new mural. Entitled simply PST, the new piece which took six days to complete depicts an artist being held up by two large hands. The project funded by DUMBO developer Two Trees Management is a reference to the Ground Zero space filled with water while the uplifting hands show that we can pull ourselves up.
