Apart from the Cyrcle. crew painting their latest mural, David Flores also took the opportunity to paint his own mural at the Culver City building complex which houses mural work by Herakut and Andrew Hem. The Branded Arts sponsored project had Flores painting his signature style design on a big scale. Last time we saw Flores working on a wall, he took one of Phil Stern’s iconic images which featured James Dean. This time around Flores went a different route and created a rendering of […]

Since the Gagosian Gallery opened a branch in Hong Kong earlier this year, some international heavy hitters like Damien Hirst and Richard Prince have already graced their walls with solo shows. For their most recent exhibition, which opened a couple weeks ago, a more local star, Zeng Fanzhi, was the feature attraction. The retrospective draws from work in the last 20 years with some pieces culled from the Chinese artist’s personal collection, tracing his career of exploring the human figure with his powerfully introspective paintings. AM recently witnessed the return of Lisa Yuskavage to David Zwirner as the New York based artist unveiled a new series of paintings in her third show with the gallery since 2006. Seen were her classic female nudes depicted in cartoonish yet erotic compositions. The color palettes she selected were vibrant, rich and diverse which complimented her wide selection of environments well. Ranging from outdoor to indoor settings, the Yuskavage placed her psychologically-charged characters in a variety of situations to draw the viewers into the […]

British graffiti writer and fine artist MODE 2 recently held a solo exhibition of fresh works at Germany’s Lucas Carrieri Gallery. With this being his first solo show in Berlin, the series entitled Offerings consisted of large canvases that centered around the raw female form. A first impression might be that it’s just gratuitous nudity for the sake of display, but if you’ve followed the work of MODE 2, you can see the raw forms and voluptuous curves point to the complexity of the female […]

Earlier this week, Elms Lesters hosted the opening for a set of new works collectively and aptly entitled Dimensional Paintings from the inventive Adam Neate (interviewed). While his landmark solo in 2009 at the same London gallery introduced his fans to the new textures and three-dimensional aspects of his new work, this latest exhibition shows a maturity, refinement, and comfort in the technique that is evident in the impressive depth and complexity of the pieces currently on view. In anticipation of the ambitious Three Amigos three-part extravaganza – a series of three separate yet unified solo shows with Dan Colen, Nate Lowman, and Dash Snow at three different yet equally symbolic venues in Rome – Gagosian Gallery attempted to kick things off in advance with a solo from the one artist they represent; Dan Colen. Entitled Trash, the body of work is a massive departure from the body of work showing concurrently at Rome’s Palazzo Rospigliosi and stays true to its signifier in […]

After giving you an overview of the inaugural PULSE Los Angeles fair earlier in the week, we now focus in on a couple of the individual booths. Mallick Williams led off the art season with solo exhibition recently with a show coinciding with the 9/11 tragedy by New York contemporary artist Erik Foss. The show entitled Avarice is a series of over 80 abstract paintings featuring challenging tha status quo notions of propriety and function between the worlds of high art and downtown culture. The works made a powerful statement as they allude to the haunting images from the terrible events that occurred ten years to the date. Check out opening night […]
