Streets: Herakut (Los Angeles)

With a little down time between the opening of Outside/In at LeBasse Projects and moving on to New Hampshire for the second part of their group show, Herakut worked their magic on a couple walls (arranged by the gallery and Warren Brand) in Los Angeles. The pensive children featured on the murals seemed to have a lighter feel when compared to the indoor work perhaps in no small part influenced by an in-person photo reference. This weekend, Corey Helford Gallery is showing Blurring The Lines, a throwback to the 80s where graffiti was not looked yet looked upon as art in the public eye. The exhibiton will feature three old school masters – Crash, Freedom and RISK. Curated by our friend Roger Gastman (co-curator of the Art In The Streets Exhibition), this gives us a close up look at the fine artwork of the three artists who were also featured in the MOCA show. Focus: New York – “Art in the Streets” @ MOCA

As stated in our focus on the Los Angeles portion of the Art in the Streets exhibition, the MOCA gave us a look at both the beginning of the movement and its roots. LA is the home of the museum and also the west coast street movement, but let’s not forget that Jeffery Deitch made his name in the streets of New York prior to his ascension to director of the museum. Streets: Phlegm – “The Harnessing of Giant Squids”

Phlegm, who recently completed the Black/Light project in London, has been active on the streets recently. Take a look at this sweet mural completed near a riverbank entitled The Harnessing of Giant Squids featuring some of his signature characters wrestling with their catch. The piece will photograph quite nicely when the winter water levels rise reminiscent of the Banksy Global Warming stencil in Camden. Although it was surprising Los Angeles did not get gifted any new Banksy pieces in the weeks leading up to the opening of the MOCA Art in the Streets exhibition, it looks like the anonymous street artist has produced a new piece in his native land. This stencil, which has not been confirmed on Mr. B’s website yet, appeared in central London over the Easter holiday and is in the same area where his famous One Nation Under CCTV used to be. Releases: Blu “Rennes” Print

Recently surfacing with friend and fellow collaborator Ericailcane in Palestra (covered) for the first time since the controversial buffing of his Art in the Streets mural by MOCA themselves, Blu has just released a much anticipated print of one of his strongest street pieces ever. Originally executed in all it’s intricate glory on a massive wall in Rennes, France (covered), the 5-color screenprint, entitled “Rennes”, is produced by Studiocromie in a signed and numbered edition of 150, measuring 70×90 cm (27.5″x35.5″) and priced at 400 […]

Last night, AM headed out to Culver City for the lone show on our schedule at LeBasse Projects. It was certainly worth the trip as we were greeted by work from a nice selection of artists in the Outside/In group show including Case, Herakut, Alexandros Vasmoulakis, SharkToof and Bumblebee. As a bonus, most of the participants were on hand before they head out to New Hampshire for the second part of the show at the Portsmouth Museum of Art. More opening pics after the jump…
