Creative Process – Tran Nguyen

You may recognize the piece above, Cast Into A Rippled Mentality, from Tran Nguyen’s show at Thinkspace Gallery last month (covered). She has now posted some images on her blog showing the step by step creation of the painting which allows us to once again reprise our Creative Process feature for you enjoyment. Pics from drawing to completion after the jump…

Creative Process: Eric Fortune (Part II)

Would you like to see this drawing from Eric Fortune (interviewed) completed as a painting? The illustrator turned fine artist recently took his fans on a step by step look at his creative process on his blog of his lastest work.  Eric takes us pretty far down the development of this piece (seen after the jump), but to see the final result, you will have to head over to Jonathan LeVine Gallery for their annual summer opening August 10th.

Streets: Elbow-Toe in London

Brian Adam Douglas, a.k.a. Elbow-Toe (interviewed) was in London a couple of weeks ago for his Due Date solo exhibition (covered), currently on at Black Rat Projects. While in town, he made sure to put up a few street pieces. AM caught up with the artist as he installed a black-and-white version of his linocut print Brother, Can You Spare a Dime? on Rivington Street in Shoreditch — opposite the landmark SCARY mural by Eine. We were able to witness the joys of trying to [...]

Studio Visit: Polly Morgan

AM recently had the opportunity to go visit Polly Morgan in her East London studio. We anticipated what we might see. Tales of Polly’s ‘chamber of horrors’ from friends who had visited previously sounded intriguing and exciting, and this promised to be a very different studio visit experience for us. Polly is a member of the Guild of Taxidermists, and has been working as an artist since 2005, since which she has shown work via Banksy at the ’05 Santa’s Ghetto, at the currently hibernating [...]

Streets: MOMO in London

Following a brief stint alongside Brad Downey and Vhils in Lisbon, Portugal as part of the ongoing and impressive Crono project (featured here and here), MOMO arranged a short stay in the UK before heading back earlier this week to his latest base in security-challenged New Orleans. For want of a more appropriate euphemism, it was an interesting few days at the AM London residence. The artist’s arrival overlapped with a visit by Christian Coinbergh’s “Gang of Three” from Stockholm – the latter in town [...]

Creative Process: Scott Musgrove

Seattle-based contemporary artist Scott Musgrove is a master of his craft. One of the preeminent members of the popsurrealist movement, he is known not only for his endless imagination in dreaming up extinct animal species and the wild worlds they inhabit, but also for his painterly expertise with oils in executing his whimsical vision. This technical proficiency and fantastical creativity was on full display during his solo exhibition, How Is The Empire? (covered), with Jonathan LeVine Gallery last year. For collectors and art enthusiasts alike, [...]

Creative Process: Banksy x Simpsons Intro Animation

Banksy recently gave us an inside look behind how he created and directed the incredible animated intro for the Simpsons episode that aired last fall. The storyboard sketch details an acerbic wit that may have been sharper than FOX would have liked: Take for example the Rupert Murdoch portrait hidden behind the t-shirt scene or the skeletal dipping of the animation cel into the toxic drums. Check out the creative process sketches after the jump.

Baby Tattooville ’10 – Art Jam

Baby Tattooville’s Art Jam is the artist activity that has received the most attention at each BT weekend. This is not without great reason as this annual fixture involves every individual artist at BT. During Art Jam, all of the featured and returning artists are welcomed to join together in creating a once-in-a-lifetime collaborative piece. This historic painting is started on opening day and is jointly worked on until the following night. BT guests are free to witness every moment of the piece’s completion. A [...]

Baby Tattooville ’10: Print Shop Presented by Diesel Fuel Prints

If you collect prints, you’re probably used to pressing a few buttons on your favorite artist’s website and having art show up at your door a few days later in a (hopefully uncrushed) tube.  But do you have any idea how your prints are made or how much effort was put into each piece?  Well, attendees of Baby Tattooville this year now do. At the Secret Society gathering, guests were treated to a special screenprinting demonstration by Andy from Diesel Fuel Prints and had the [...]

Creative Process: Brandi Milne – “Breathe in Peaceful Slumber”

The step-by-step progress pics of this piece from the show, “Breathe in Peaceful Slumber”, show the stages of her technique from the initial drawing to the final layers. Take a look after the jump…
