Streets: Kenny Scharf @ West Hollywood Library Project (Part III)

After spending four days in Philadelphia last week working on a mural, Kenny Scharf (interviewed) returns to Los Angeles to paint his wall for the West Hollywood Libary Project. It will probably take a couple more days for him to finish, but when it’s done, it will stand alongside murals by RETNA (covered) and Shepard Fairey (more on this tomorrow). Photo set after the jump taken for us by Carlos Gonzalez .

Streets: RETNA @ West Hollywood Library Project (Part I)

Drawing comparisons to his recent mural at the Pasadena Museum of California Art for the Street Cred exhibition (covered), RETNA (featured) lent his street calligraphy to an ambitious new project with Kenny Scharf and Shepard Fairey in Los Angeles. We’ll have more for you as Shep and Scharf get in the mix, but head over to the West Hollywood Library if you are interested in seeing some of these street legends in progress. More pics after the jump…

Brooklyn Museum Cancels Scheduled “Art in the Streets” Exhibition

Perhaps KAWS had a sixth sense as to what was going to happen when he placed his Passing Through Companion at The Standard in New York recently. The street art and graffiti community was saddened as news has came today that the Brooklyn Museum has cancelled the scheduled next stop for the current Art in the Streets exhibition currently showing at the MOCA. Although the museum has cited a lack of financial funding as the reason for forgoing the show, AM can’t help but wonder […]

Behind-The-Scenes: Saber – “Keprage RWB”

Since the opening of his show, The American Graffiti Artist (covered), at the Opera Gallery, SABER (interviewed) has been involved in a slew of other shows including Street Cred in Pasadena and Assorted Flavor just last weekend. We thought we would rewind back to the NYC opening and take a closer look at the behind-the-scenes action of the creation of the Keprage RWB print that was released concurrently with that show (details for purchase here). There are more photos after the jump but we would also […]

Free Mondays from Banksy for “Art in the Streets” @ MOCA

If you haven’t yet stopped by to check out the historic Art in the Streets exhibition at the MOCA, now may be the perfect time. “Now” meaning today or any other Monday until it closes on August 8th as it will be free thanks to the sponsorship of Banksy. As he wryly states – “I don’t think you should have to pay to look at graffiti. You should only pay if you want to get rid of it.” Even if you have seen the show […]

Interviews: Neck Face @ Levi’s Workshop (MOCA)

Last Sunday, AM dropped by the Levi’s Film Workshop, where they were screening the trailer for Born Under a Bad Sign, a film in progress by artist Neck Face and director Isaiah Seret. The upcoming feature-length kung fu horror movie, starring the artist was filmed in his alleyway installation at MOCA’s Art in the Streets exhibition. Those who attended the screening also got to see an extended fight scene (censored for museum audiences) which ended in co-star, Mindy Kelly, being decapitated. Neck Face tossed back […]

On Tuesday night, Hollywood’s historic Egyptian Theatre unveiled the documentary, Outside In: The Story of Art in the Streets, created in the Levi’s Film Workshop and directed by the talented Alex Stapleton. Shown in front of a packed theater, the film takes a closer look at MOCA’s groundbreaking Art in the Streets exhibit (covered) while focusing on a number of artists including Saber, Risk, Shepard Fairey, Mister Cartoon and Revok just to name a few. The director’s attempt to display the artistry and effort behind the street […]

Streets: Eric Haze x Standard Hotel (Los Angeles)

NY graf legend Eric Haze recently flew out to Los Angeles to participate in the MOCA’s Art in the Streets exhibition, but being the busy bee he always is, he also took some time to put up some street work in the City of Angels. Working with the Standard Hotel he painted this great mural outside of the downtown location. Haze sent us these pictures of him creating this beast which measured 40 x 6 feet. This isn’t the first time he’s worked with the […]
