Streets: Ma’claim (Egypt)

After showing you a piece memorializing the late Khaled Said by Case, we present further evidence that the Ma’claim crew has interest in Egypt and the current political upheaval there. Akut from Herakut along with Rusk, Tasso, and the aforementioned Case were recently in the country hitting up the streets of Cairo and Alexandria with murals. Last month in Berlin, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Foundation’s Human Rights Award for 2011 was awarded to Khaled Said of Egypt and Slim Amamou of Tunisia. Said’s sister, Zahraa Kassem received the award on the late activist’s behalf at a ceremony that included the unveiling of a portrait created by Andreas von Chrzanowski (aka Case) on remnants of the Berlin Wall and will be eventually placed in the Freedom Park (covered). Making use of their time in Los Angeles wisely (also see their street piece in Culver City), German duo Hera and Akut moved on to their next project – a wall with fellow Ma’claim crew member Case aka Andreas von Chrzanowski. While Akut used his photorealism skills on some signature characters with Hera, Case worked on some giant birds to interact with the children. Last night, AM headed out to Culver City for the lone show on our schedule at LeBasse Projects. It was certainly worth the trip as we were greeted by work from a nice selection of artists in the Outside/In group show including Case, Herakut, Alexandros Vasmoulakis, SharkToof and Bumblebee. As a bonus, most of the participants were on hand before they head out to New Hampshire for the second part of the show at the Portsmouth Museum of Art. More opening pics after the jump…

This Saturday night, April 23rd, Outside/In opens at LeBasse Projects’ Culver City Gallery featuring a group of internationally-known street artists. The list includes Case, Herakut, Alexandros Vasmoulakis, Hush, SharkToof and Bumblebee and will continue on to the Portsmouth Museum of Art in New Hampshire with the opening there scheduled for May 11th. Pretty much every show or event we attend, we bump into a group of regulars out showing their support. The VNA crew are no exception to this. We just recently picked up a copy of the brand new edition of VNA – Issue 11 – which features Insa, Case, Gaia and Mike Giant amongst others. Andreas von Chrzanowski (aka Case) opened his first UK solo with the Signal Gallery (in conjunction with Campbarbossa) this past Thursday night with the finished works were nothing short of sharp and interesting. Utilizing his talents with the spray can, Andreas worked his crisp techniques onto numerous found mediums from books to wood to canvas. After opening his solo in LA last October, Andreas von Chrzanowski aka case (part of the Ma’Claim crew) is set to open a solo show at the Signal Gallery (interviewed) in conjunction with Campbarbossa. As evidenced by the piece above, his photorealistic spray paint skills are off the charts. The show, “Never odd or eveN” opens on February 18th in London. Via Vandalog.

Carmichael Gallery will exhibit a selection of work from Simon Birch, Boxi, case, Hush (interviewed), Mark Jenkins, Nunca and Sixeart and a daily site-specific installation from Aakash Nihalani at SCOPE Miami 2009 this year.
