Openings: Faile & Bast – “Deluxx Fluxx” @ The Belt (Detroit)

Over the weekend, Deluxe Fluxx opened in a new permanent home at The Belt in Detroit, a downtown alleyway with art curated by the Library Street Collective. The immersive art installation & arcade by Brooklyn-based artist duo Faile and artist Bast has traveled to multiple locations around the world, but will be putting down its roots in the Motor City as a bar and music venue. Those hunting for the location should look on the north side of the alley for a door with neon X’s, which […]

Showing: Margo Wolowiec – “Taking Over” @ Library Street Collective (Detroit)

Currently at the Library Street Collective in Detroit, Margo Wolowiec has a show on display featuring her “#rosegarden” series of works. Entitled Taking Over, the new pieces continue her exploration on the relationship between weaving and computing, both in the binary concept that each is based on as well as mixing the two in her creative process. She references social media for her imagery, taking the photos she finds through hashtags and geotags and then using a sublimation dye process to transfer them onto groups of threads which […]

Showing: “Machine Show” @ Library Street Collective

Currently showing in Detroit at Library Street Collective is a four person exhibition featuring contributions from Paul Kremer, Mark Flood, MOMO, and REVOK. Entitled Machine Show and curated by Kremer, the focus was on the unique art-making tools, processes, and methodology behind their work. On display are the organic abstractions from Kremer created by dropping paint on rotating easels of his own design, the signature lace paintings from Flood, examples of pieces created by MOMO’s Wall Eater winch which tears carefully arranged drawings from behind glued paper, […]

Previews: AJ Fosik – “From Ripe to Rot” @ Library Street Collective

On August 19th, Library Street Collective will be opening a solo show from AJ Fosik (featured) entitled From Ripe to Rot. Inspired by city he was born in, the Motor City’s continued evolution, transformation, and reinvention fuels the ideas behind this new body of work featuring his intricate wood assemblages. Fosik’s practice is informed by folk art, taxidermy, and cultural rituals which can be seen in the three dimensional beasts he creates as well in the newer more contained compositional pieces. Discuss AJ Fosik here.

Showing: Faile – “The Size of the Fight” @ Library Street Collective (Detroit)

Last weekend, Library Street Collective opened a new solo from Faile (featured) entitled The Size of the Fight, the duo’s first show in Detroit. Along with originals, prints, and sculptural works, one of the walls featured a mural from the Patrick’s as they took inspiration from the Motor City’s revival in the last several years. The Brooklyn-based artists also unveiled five large-scale painted, stenciled, and silkscreened works on wood panels in the adjacent alleyway aka “The Belt,” the gallery’s public exhibition space (more on this later). Discuss Faile here.

Coming up on June 24th, Library Street Collective will be presenting new work from Faile (featured) in their first Detroit exhibition. The title of the show, The Size of the Fight, references Mark Twain’s quote, “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog,” which can be applied to the Motor City’s revival in the last several years. In association with the show, the Brooklyn duo will be unveiling five large-scale painted, stenciled, and silkscreened works on wood panels in […]

Previews: Kelsey Brookes – “Position” @ Library Street Collective

On April 27th, Library Street Collective will be presenting new works from Kelsey Brookes, his second solo with the gallery in Detroit. Entitled Position, the show continues the San Diego-based artist’s practice of combining his love for science and his artistic vision, drawing from his background as a former biologist and from his interest in psychedelics. The new pieces investigate both neurotoxins and the Fibonacci sequence, one which is harmful while the other a pattern of perfection in nature, all expressed with his abstract virtual language. Take a […]

Showing through April 8 at the Library Street Collective in Detroit is an exhibition from Sam Friedman. For LOVE SONGS, the artist from New York has a series of canvases as well as over 30 paintings on paper on display that look back on his exploration of beach scenes and sunsets. Previews: Sam Friedman – “LOVE SONGS” @ Library Street Collective

Tomorrow night (February 11th) in Detroit, Library Street Collective will be presenting new work from Sam Friedman in a show entitled LOVE SONGS. Continuing his deconstruction of natural landscapes, the New York-based artist has prepared a series of canvases as well as over 30 paintings on paper that revisit his earlier exploration of beach scenes and sunsets. The two different sets of works will allow for a nice contrast in techniques as the canvases use a single type of paint and a freehand technique, while the pieces on […]
