On April 27th, Library Street Collective will be presenting new works from Kelsey Brookes, his second solo with the gallery in Detroit. Entitled Position, the show continues the San Diego-based artist’s practice of combining his love for science and his artistic vision, drawing from his background as a former biologist and from his interest in psychedelics. Showing through April 8 at the Library Street Collective in Detroit is an exhibition from Sam Friedman. For LOVE SONGS, the artist from New York has a series of canvases as well as over 30 paintings on paper on display that look back on his exploration of beach scenes and sunsets. Utilizing a variety of techniques that speak to his background, the colorful work continues his deconstruction and revision of natural landscapes, achieved through a balanced mix of abstraction and figurative elements. At the end of last month, Swoon (interviewed) unveiled the latest iteration of her Thalassa installation at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Fans of the her work can check out the suspended sculptural piece at the Woodward Avenue entrance through the end of May of next year. This display of Swoon’s work will round out nicely her contributions to the art scene of the Motor City to go along with her exhibition opening soon at Library Street Collective as well as a mural project in the Jefferson-Chalmers district. Starting on September 24th, the Detroit Institute of Arts will unveil an installation from Swoon (interviewed) entitled Thalassa. The 20-foot tall, 400-pound sculptural piece named after the Greek goddess of the sea – originally displayed in New Orleans (covered) – will be adapted for DIA’s Great Hall. The massive work from the American artist will be suspended from the ceiling and will coincide with a mural project in Detroit’s Jefferson-Chalmers district. Last weekend, Library Street Collective in Detroit hosting the opening for Futura latest solo show entitled NEW HORIZONS. Along with all new paintings that features some of the graffiti legend’s signature abstract color studies with gyroscopic structures as well as his old school pointman characters, new large-scale pieces were prepared for the outdoor space in BELT Alley for the PUBLIC MATTER series of works.
