Basel Week Miami ’11: Scope

One of the satellite fairs we attended during Art Basel Week Miami was Scope. Housing a variety of genres, we saw a healthy mix of street art, low brow and emerging contemporary art working together as gallerists brought work from artists which you may be familiar with. From OsGemeos to Roa, Ron English to Ray Caesar, Aakash Nihalani to Jenny Morgan, there seemed to be something for everyone at this fair. Check out more photos after the jump.

Teaser: Esao Andrews – “Nowhere” @ Thinkspace

As Art Basel Week Miami starts to wind down, although we still have much to show you, some of our attention turns to the shows coming up soon. One of the ones we are looking forward to opens on January 7th at Thinkspace. Teaser: Ray Caesar – “it started with eve…” launch @ Stephen Webster

Tonight at Stephen Webster in Beverly Hills in their 2nd floor gallery space, an exhibited curated by Corey Helford Gallery will open featuring the art work of Ray Caesar (interviewed). The murder mystery themed evening will also feature a launch of the jewelry line’s it started with eve... collection, a set of rings inspired by histories of the most villainous sirens as well as an installation from Cameron Silver. Basel Week Miami ’11: Mark Ryden x Taschen “Pinxit” Party

Last night, AM attended the release party for Mark Ryden x Taschen Books. The Basel Week event was held at the Soho House Miami and gave us a first look at their newly released book Pinxit which contains a comprehensive survey of Mr. Ryden’s illustrious 20 year career (previewed here). Mark’s peers & friends from all over the nation came in droves to help him celebrate at this great event. Check out more after the jump.

Yesterday, AM stopped by PULSE, one of the satellite fairs of Art Basel Week Miami, and we were greeted by a pretty solid selection of art work from various artists and their galleries (after the fixed a lighting issue). Releases: Mark Ryden – “Pinxit” Book

Today marks the release by Taschen of Mark Ryden’s Pinxit (the title is a playful references to both the preponderance of pink in his work and the Latin word meaning “he painted this,” which artists like Ingres and Rubens once appended after their signatures according to Erratic Phenomena). The publication is the most comprehensive survey of Ryden’s 20 year career and works ever and if the book to have if you are a fan although it will set you back a pretty penny. Update: Scott Musgrove – “Walktopus” Bronze

We’ve featured some of Scott Musgrove’s (featured) bronze sculptures before in the past here on AM, but this newest one may be our favorite. Walktopus stands five feet tall and will feature working candle lanterns when finished. Next up is to get this clay sculpt molded and cast in bronze by the good people at Metalphysic in Tucson. Openings: “East West Connect” @ Above Second

Last Friday night, the Above Second Gallery in Hong Kong hosted Arrested Motion’s first curatorial project, East West Connect, with a lineup that represented the diverse selection of art we love and cover for you every day. It was gratifying to see that art fans in HK appreciated this type of art as well, evidenced by the turnout and the fact that most pieces that sold so far have found homes with local collectors. Basel Week Miami ’11: Underbelly Show

Remember that secretive and unprecedented undertaking in New York last year entitled the Underbelly Project. Toiling four stories underground in an abandoned subway station in New York, over 100 artists invited by PAC and Workhouse left their mark on the space with murals and graffiti. Although the original “urban gallery” was sealed and unaccessible, this environment will be recreated in Miami for the Underbelly Show opening from Dec. 2 -5 (78 NW 25th Street in Miami, FL).
