Openings: “Mint Julep” @ Galleria Patricia Armocida

As part of their pre-summer program, Galleria Patricia Armocida in Milan recently opened a group show titled Mint Julep. Featuring works by Maya Hayuk,  Cleon Peterson, Revok, and  Francesco Igory Deiana, the exhibition opened on May 18th and will stay on view through July 22nd. The idea of this show was to mix artists and their diverse styles into a fresh, attractive installation, similar to a Mint Julep cocktail, made by mixing bourbon, ice, sugar and mint into a refreshing drink. Viewers got to see Hayuk’s colorful, layered weave paintings that balance between tradition, psychedelic, strict […]

Showing: “City Lights” @ Millennium Iconoclast Museum of Art

Although the opening was delayed due to the terrible recent events in Brussels, City Lights at the newly formed Millennium Iconoclast Museum of Art ended up kicking off successfully earlier this month. Featuring the works of Maya Hayuk, Swoon, Momo, and Faile, the exhibition included installations from the American artist to go along with original works on display. Photo credit: la Repubblica.

Upcoming: Maya Hayuk – “Grow Room” @ Alice Gallery

On 3rd of March Maya Hayuk will be back at Alice Gallery in Brussels to open her third solo with the gallery – Grow Room. From the few preview images we’ve seen, the show will include more complex compositions from the Brooklyn-based artist. Through intricate patterns and lush colors, Hayuk creates paintings and murals that recall traditional Ukrainian crafts, airbrushed manicures, and mandalas. Both rebelliously psychedelic and strictly symmetric, her works balance between creating a visual illusion and reusing orthodox weaving patterns. The new pieces look to be further experimentations, […]

Releases: Maya Hayuk x Max Mara – “Optiprism” Eyewear

For the Autumn/Winter 2015 season, Max Mara has collaborated with artist Maya Hayuk on three different styles of sunglasses featuring a pattern she has dubbed Optiprism. The multicolored rainbow graphics utilized for this project mirror the works from the New York-based artist that fit well both in the gallery as well as on the streets. The original diptych painting by Hayuk now hangs in the fashion house’s Madison Avenue store with a limited amount of the new eyewear destined for boutiques around the world starting in […]

Streets: Urban Nation / Project M/8 – (Part II) – Maya Hayuk

After sharing the first set of photos from Urban Nation for the 8th phase (curated by StolenSpace) of their public arts program featuring Shepard Fairey, D*Face, Cyrcle., and Word To Mother painting four columns of a building, we now turn our attention to Maya Hayuk. For her part, the American artist worked amongst other murals painted before for the project, leaving her signature nterlocked stripes of color for her fans in Berlin to enjoy. Maya Hayuk Sues Starbucks

For those who frequent Starbucks, you will have no doubt seen artwork that looks disturbingly similar to the work of Maya Hayuk, an artist whose work has been covered here on AM for a while. Coinciding with the release of their new Mini Frappuccinos last month, the promotional material features crossing stripes of color often seen in the Brooklyn-based artist’s gallery work and outdoor murals. And if it’s true that Starbucks’ ad agency reached out to her last October regarding the project (which she declined due to […]

Streets: Surface Project (Copenhagen)

The 5th show on Søren Solkær‘s Surface world tour opened on June 12th at Øksnehallen in central Copenhagen. The exhibition itself features 122 portraits of some of world’s most famous street artists, who were all featured in his recent book Surface (covered). To celebrate this big event, the Danish photographer invited six international and esteemed artists to create large-scale murals in the streets of Copenhagen. Some of them were returning the capital, some visiting for the first time,  and in the week before the opening Copenhagen’s cityscape got ugpraged by six […]

Streets: Maya Hayuk (Coney Art Walls)

What started out as a sunny Saturday morning eventually turned into nearly five spotty days of thunderstorms, coastline flash flooding and Maya Hayuk relentlessly riding out the storm in pursuit of her craft. As the weather went from bright, blooming and beautiful to dark, dreary and dismal, so also morphed the aesthetic of this incredible wall. The multilayered Maya Hayuk who clearly absorbs the environment in which she inhabits is obviously an introvert, masquerading as a social butterfly. Her process is both beautiful and organic. Many artists would have called it a […]

While travelling to Morocco for the opening of Main Street show at Mohammed VI Museum (MMVI) of modern and contemporary art (covered), as well as taking part in the Jidar street art festival there, Maya Hayuk made a stop in Paris to work on her new limited edition fine print. In collaboration with PrintThemAll, whose Nicolas Couturieux curated the Rabat show, the NY-based artist produced her first lithograph at Idem studio as a part of their series marking this big event. The 10 color piece was entirely created […]
