Maya Hayuk Sues Starbucks

For those who frequent Starbucks, you will have no doubt seen artwork that looks disturbingly similar to the work of Maya Hayuk, an artist whose work has been covered here on AM for a while. Coinciding with the release of their new Mini Frappuccinos last month, the promotional material features crossing stripes of color often seen in the Brooklyn-based artist’s gallery work and outdoor murals. And if it’s true that Starbucks’ ad agency reached out to her last October regarding the project (which she declined due to […]

Streets: Surface Project (Copenhagen)

The 5th show on Søren Solkær‘s Surface world tour opened on June 12th at Øksnehallen in central Copenhagen. The exhibition itself features 122 portraits of some of world’s most famous street artists, who were all featured in his recent book Surface (covered). To celebrate this big event, the Danish photographer invited six international and esteemed artists to create large-scale murals in the streets of Copenhagen. Some of them were returning the capital, some visiting for the first time,  and in the week before the opening Copenhagen’s cityscape got ugpraged by six […]

Streets: Maya Hayuk (Coney Art Walls)

What started out as a sunny Saturday morning eventually turned into nearly five spotty days of thunderstorms, coastline flash flooding and Maya Hayuk relentlessly riding out the storm in pursuit of her craft. As the weather went from bright, blooming and beautiful to dark, dreary and dismal, so also morphed the aesthetic of this incredible wall. The multilayered Maya Hayuk who clearly absorbs the environment in which she inhabits is obviously an introvert, masquerading as a social butterfly. Her process is both beautiful and organic. Many artists would have called it a […]

While travelling to Morocco for the opening of Main Street show at Mohammed VI Museum (MMVI) of modern and contemporary art (covered), as well as taking part in the Jidar street art festival there, Maya Hayuk made a stop in Paris to work on her new limited edition fine print. In collaboration with PrintThemAll, whose Nicolas Couturieux curated the Rabat show, the NY-based artist produced her first lithograph at Idem studio as a part of their series marking this big event. The 10 color piece was entirely created […]

POW! WOW! ’15 / Streets: Maya Hayuk

One of the most popular pieces painted for this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii (more coverage here) came from Maya Hayuk, who recently completed her mural in the Kaka’ako district. Working with her assistant for four solid days, the New York-based artist applied layers upon layers of thick colorful paint, creating another signature piece that quickly became one of the favorites among visitors. Due to her incredible energy and positive attitude, her wall was one of the more interesting ones to visit during its making. With tunes pumping from morning till late […]

Releases: Sid Vaga x Maya Hayuk – “The Pilar Project”

One of the releases coinciding with Basel Week Miami is this wicked project between Maya Hayuk and DJ / producer Sid Vaga. The idea behind this release was that “the best collaborations come from two voices that create a third, unique voice.” Known for creating art that is inspired by the neon lights and party culture, this is not the first time Hayuk has mixed art with music. The Brooklyn-based artist created an exclusive, limited edition record sleeve from her recently released and sold out silkscreen edition Multiverses #2. “The idea for this collaboration […]
