Openings: Festival Iminente (London)

Festival Iminente (previewed) opened recently and will bring two days of art and music to London’s Brick Lane. The festival serves as both a celebration of Portuguese and pan-European culture and a warning of what may be lost as a result of the UK’s exit from the European Union. Vhil‘s cast concrete sculpture is based upon a sketch which he drew on a previous trip to the capital. Streets: Shepard Fairey x Vhils (Lisbon)

Just this weekend, Printed Matters, a show from  Shepard Fairey (featured) opened at Underdogs in Lisbon, a gallery co-founded by the locally-based Vhils (interviewed). Their collaboration didn’t end there as the American and Portuguese street artists combined their artistic vision for a joint mural featuring Shep’s iconic imagery and Vhils unique mark-making. Previews/Interviews: Vhils // Festival Iminente (London)

Festival Iminente will be bringing a taste of Portuguese culture to East London at the end of the month. The event is being curated by Vhils and the Underdogs Gallery which he established in 2013. The festival debuted in Lisbon’s Oeiras district last autumn and this latest iteration carries a particularly contemporary theme with the subtitle Art Before Brexit. Upcoming: Vhils – “Debris” @ Navy Yard No.1 – Contemporary Art Center (Macau)

Following up on an exhibition in the neighboring Hong Kong (covered), Vhils (filmed) will be opening a show on May 31st at Navy Yard No.1 – Contemporary Art Center in Macau. Entitled Debris, like his exhibition in HK, this event was organized with the support of the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Foundation (HOCA) and will lead to an interesting body of work from the Lisbon-based artist seeing as this Special Administrative Region of China used to be a Portuguese colony. Vhils x GS1 Portugal | Center for Innovation and Competitiveness (Lisbon)

Vhils (filmed) recently finished a collaboration with the architects behind the new headquarters of GS1 Portugal | Center for Innovation and Competitivenes in Lisbon. For this project, the Portuguese artist’s unique mark marking skills were applied to the concrete slabs that make up the exterior of the building, giving the facade some abstract and textured imagery highlighted by elements of facial features. Recap: The Hard Rock Stadium Murals (Miami)

Releases: Vhils x Underdogs Edition

On December 7th (4pm GMT), Vhils (filmed) will be releasing a super limited edition through Underdogs. Produced in a run of 12, the piece seems to have some dimensional qualities to it, mirroring the Portuguese artist’s studio and public works. Streets: World Roundup (July 11 – July 31)

We end July this year with another Streets World Roundup, covering some of the public art from around the globe that you may have missed. Leading things off is a 600 meter mural Evoca1 painted in Abu Dhabi just in time for Eid al-Fitr.
