Brooklyn chalk artist extraordinaire Ellis G. went to town on Santa Monica Blvd. last night as part of “From the Streets of Brooklyn” (teased and previewed) opening 7pm tonight at Thinkspace.

His chalk etchings capture the shadows of everyday street objects and their surrounding environment. Anything that casts a shadow is fair game: bikes, fences, lightposts, and even full city blocks.

Ellis G’s former graffiti writing background is apparent in the precise execution of his work. His lines are clean, performed with long, confident pulls. In areas where the shadows of a particular object are not as pronounced, Ellis manipulates his chalk so that his lines fade along with the shadows.

The result is something truly amazing, presenting a fresh perspective on the everyday urban landscape.
