Highlights: Recommended Openings For July 23-29

Many openings to recommend this week and if you’ll notice, there is a large chunk of our calendar devoted to SDCC as there are many art-related events at the “nerd prom” in San Diego this week. One of our favorite images though (seen above) is from Nicoletta Ceccoli (interviewed) as she opens her two person show with Eric Fortune (interview to follow soon) this Friday at Roq La Rue. If you recall, we recently showed you the mural that Ai Yamaguchi did for a Shu Uemura store in SF. Continuing on the trend of collaborations between artists and cosmetic companies, Marilyn Minter joins Fafi in promoting the brand MAC, with a campaign starting in August. AM is a big fan of Alexandros Vasmoulakis.Â Although he currently resides in Berlin, the young Greek artist dominates the urban skyline of his hometown Athens with enormous murals on the city’s high rise buildings.Â We love the blend of street and pop surrealist qualities in Alexandros’ work and his sharp use of color to create a sensation of movement.Â The scale on which he works and his ability to incorporate his pieces into their environment is very impressive. Streets: D*Face in Pisa

We love the way that UK artist D*Face combines a healthy mix of pop art with street art, and these pictures of some of his latest outdoor work are no exception. D*Face was recently invited out to Italy by Rate Civic Pisano – Pisa Town Council – to paint a mural dedicated to Keith Haring, who was commissioned by the town to paint his rare “permanent” mural “Tuttomondo” in the city exactly 20 years ago.
