Openings: Catherine Brooks & Hannah Stouffer @ Thinkspace

Opening along side the fantastic show from Stella Im Hultberg last Friday at Thinkspace were new works from Catherine Brooks (above) & Hannah Stouffer.  Brooks lit up the back room with her vivacious presence, impressing us with her detailed paintings and large-scale handcut wood assemblage.  Take a look at all Brooks’ work after the jump as well as Stouffer’s intricate compositions that had to be seen in person to be fully appreciated…

Openings: Todd Schorr – “American Surreal” @ San Jose Museum of Art

This past Thursday, AM took a trip down to the San Jose Museum of Art to visit Todd Schorr (interview & studio visit) and check out “Surreal Night,” a celebration of his 25 year retrospective currently on display. While there, we were able to attend the panel discussion, meet Todd, pick up a copy of his latest book, American Surreal and take some pictures of his major retrospective exhibition. More about the show and the rest of the photos after the jump.

Preview/Setup: Clayton Brothers @ Patrick Painter

AM just got back from a lil’ visit to the Patrick Painter galleries in Santa Monica to take in the work of the Clayton Brothers (studio visit). The new shows look amazing. The larger works were being photographed when we popped through, so we offer up a nice lil’ view of the other gallery which showcases the smaller works. The larger works are just breathtaking. Look for more on those and the opening night to be posted here soon. More photos after the jump…

Openings: INSA x Nike – “Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places”

Last night, Nike Sportswear and Protein had a preview opening for INSA’s latest exhibition “Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places.” The London pop-up show is part of the IAM1 Project by Nike and celebrates the launch of the Nike Air Maxim, which is a hybrid remake of the classic Air Max 1. The main focus was of course the exhibition by London based artist, INSA, who showed up with his arsenal of mixed media goodies – canvas, photography, prints and even an awesome 35 frame […]

Preview: “Momentum” @ Nucleus Gallery

An interesting mix of artists are exhibiting together tomorrow night at the Nucleus Gallery, including Tiffany Bozic (above), Chigi, In Kyung Lim, Tessar Lo, Veronique Meignaud, and Brooks Salzwedel.  Of particular interest to us is seeing how the work of Bozic and Lo has progressed since their last shows at Fecal Face Gallery (covered) and LeBasse Projects (covered) respectively.  Our friend Commandax wrote up a nice article about Lo’s abstract evolution here. More preview images after the jump for this group show.

Streets: WK Interact in NYC

AM continues to be blown away by the explosive power of WK Interact. For “Motion Portrait,” his current show at Jonathan Levine Gallery (covered), the Frenchman created a series of pieces entitled “Twelve Angry Men.” These works personify the prejudice, turmoil and conflict experienced in the classic play and film. In his recent video press conference, WK hinted that he would be taking his portraits out on the streets. We are very happy to report that he has remained true to his word. Not only do we agree […]

Art Focus: Dash Snow (1981-2009)

Photo by Craig McDean. Via Interview Magazine. On the night of Monday, July 13, 2009, Dashiell A. Snow tragically passed away at Lafayette House, a hotel in Manhattan. He was only 27 years old and leaves behind a 1-year old daughter named Secret and her mother, his partner Jade Berreau. Snow was one of the most promising young artists to emerge from New York City and was an inspiration and influence to many other artists in the area, many of whom were long-time close friends […]

Openings: Zevs – “Liquidated Logos” @ Art Statements Gallery (Hong Kong)

AM stopped by Zevs’ “Liquidated Logos” exhibition at the Art Statements Gallery in Hong Kong to bring you an exclusive first look at this wild show. The French street artist known for “flipping the script” on world renowned brands such as Coca-Cola and Chanel, broadened his scope to include fashion icon Louis Vuitton. Using his trademark technique of “liquidation,” Zev showed the trendy residents of Hong Kong his reinterpretation of Murakami x Louis Vuitton’s famous “multi colore” pattern among one of many iconic logos he […]

Openings: “Celeritas” @ SURU

The motorcycle culture themed “Celeritas” show (previewed) and silent auction held last weekend at SURU in Los Angeles was a huge success, raising $66,000 for Riders for Health, a non-profit that funds the transportation of medical personnel to remote communities in Africa. The centerpiece of the show was a 2009 Suzuki Hayabusa customized by Barry McGee coupled with a mannequin draped in styling Darren Romanelli fashioned motorcycle leathers. Accompanying this were a series of custom helmets from Alex Pardee, Audrey Kawasaki (interviewed), Estevan Oriol, Futura, James Jean (interviewed), Joe Hahn, […]
