Openings: “Mom & Popism” @ Gawker HQ

This past Tuesday night, AM was on hand on the rooftop of Gawker Headquarters to cover the private preview party for the exciting collaboration exhibit “Mom & Popism“ (previewed),Â conceived and curated byÂ Billi Kid. Releases: David Choe – “Choegal Siamese Twin”

Next week, David Choe will be dropping the latest and arguably the illest version of hisÂ â€œChoegalâ€Â art figure, this time re-versioned as a Siamese twin. The hand-painted figures, total edition size of 500, cost $65 and will be available through Ningyoushi and DoublePunch. A look at the other side of the face and the packaging after the jump.

At about two in the morning last Sunday, AM met up with Hugh Leeman in the heart of San Francisco’s seedy Tenderloin district as he was preparing for his upcoming show, “Recognition” at the esteemed White Walls Gallery. Looks like these mouseketeer buddies of Bob Dob were on the wrong side of a beat down.Â He did ten variants on this theme for his show “Black Eyed Mouseketeers” opening at Perihelion Arts in Phoenix tomorrow night.Â Of course, he had to include the little devil “Luey” in the mix as well.Â See him and some more of the images after the jump…

Two artists whose work we enjoy immensely, Nicoletta Ceccoli (interviewed) & Eric Fortune (interviewed) opened up their joint show a couple weekends ago at Roq La Rue.Â Ceccoli’s delicate attention to detail in and her clever juxtaposition of humans and nature (above) along with Fortune’s patient brushwork and mastery of textures/motions were on full display.Â If you are lucky enough to be in the Seattle area, definitely take this opportunity to check out not one but two extraordinary artists. The annual BLAB! Show returns to Copro Gallery and brings with it the usual lineup of heavy hitters. Big news is that Mark Ryden will be exhibiting an older 10×11″ illustration-based work in the show, which can be yours for $33k. NYT’s Art Critic Reviews Os Gemeos Mural

Earlier this week, the New York Times published a glowing review by esteemed art critic Roberta Smith of the recently completed mural by Os Gemeos (covered). Other than being mistaken about this being the twins’ first public artwork in Manhattan (first legal public artwork, perhaps), Smith gets everything else right, describing the stunning work in loving detail. It’s not everyday that the “Old Gray Lady” gives such accolades to street artists, so congrats to Os Gemeos. Well deserved. Discuss Os Gemeos here.

Brendan Monroe (interviewed) will be exhibiting some new works in October at the Richard Heller Gallery in Santa Monica. Here’s a pretty sweet piece from Hawaii native Edwin Ushiro’s upcoming show opening September 12th at LeBasse Projects.
