Preview: Candice Tripp @ Joshua Liner Gallery

For those who enjoyed Candice Tripp’s (interviewed) twist on childhood myths and wives’ tales in August at the Carmichael Gallery, you will have to pay attention to her show opening at the Joshua Liner Gallery in November.  With her unique composition and clever wit, we think art lovers in New York will welcome her first solo show in the States with open arms. Expect more coverage from AM to follow, but for now, check out some preview pics after the jump…

Openings: “Giant Robot Biennale” @ the Japanese American National Museum (Part II)

As we mentioned in Part I of our coverage of the Giant Robot Biennale, we saved four artists in the upper gallery to share with you in this article. The work of James Jean (interviewed), David Choe, Jeff Soto (interviewed), and Souther Salazar were definitely the highlights of the exhibition, at least in our minds. It seems like they put in the effort and time to create some of the best pieces we have ever seen from them. Take a look at all the amazing […]

Openings: “Giant Robot Biennale” @ the Japanese American National Museum (Part I)

This year’s Giant Robot Biennale opened last Saturday night at the Japanese American National Museum. To start things off, George Takei, (of Star Trek fame and now of Heroes fame), introduced and brought Eric Nakamura (interviewed) up on stage. Eric, one of the founders of GR then proceeded to give a speech and introduced some of the artists. After that, it was time to check out all the art work – with the group show in the floor level gallery and the heavy hitters in […]

Glenn Barr will be returning to Detroit for his first solo show there in seven years. The exhibition opening on October 28th at 323 East will include nearly a decade’s worth of original works, prints and published works (some new originals as well). He will also be releasing 35 limited edition, signed and numbered giclee prints sold exclusively for this show on opening night. On display will also be his fantastic bronze figure “Happiness” (seen above). Show card after the jump.

Openings: Os Gemeos – “Vertigo” @ Brazilian Art Museum: Sao Paulo (MAB-FAAP)

The first time we caught Os Gemeos at a museum was at the CCBB of Rio de Janerio (covered). Then this summer, we hung with Octavio and Gustavo on the streets of Manhattan (here) as they created an awe-inspiring mural to share with the citizens of New York. With all the success they already had in 2009, it left us wondering what they would do next? Well, great artists often seem to build upon their successes and now the Brazilian twins have stepped their game up again with […]

Openings: Jim Houser / “True Self” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Friday night, AM had the pleasure of attending the preview opening of two shows at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery. In the front was the “True Self” group show curated by Gary Baseman (previewed), in which an impressive selection of artists, including James Jean, James Marshall and Ron English, were asked to submit work that they felt represented “their true passion or obsession.” In the second gallery was a solo show by Jim Houser, entitled “Make Room for the Emptiness.” Houser combines and recombines characters, symbols […]

Studio Visits: Chloe Early

We’re big fans of the ever-so-talented Chloe Early (interviewed) here at AM, and recently were honoured to visit her studio in London. Chloe is currently preparing for her most ambitious solo show to date at London’s StolenSpace gallery, entitled “Clouded Apollo,” which is the name of a species of butterfly. Chloe tells us that the title for the show was inspired by the themes of flight, hovering, suspension, mythology, light and lunar missions – all of which she has been exploring within this body of work. […]

Openings: Joe Ledbetter – “Birds & Bees” @ Artoyz (Paris)

After moving from London to Amsterdam, Joe Ledbetter hit up Paris for the third leg of his European Amalgamation Tour (details here). This time, with a show at Artoyz entitled “Birds and Bees,” Joe once again brought a new body of work including paintings, sketches, prints and a special colorway of his Terror and Magnus toys. Check out all the pics after the jump…

Video/Openings: Know Hope and Aakash Nihalani @ the Blk River Festival

Know Hope (interviewed) and Aakash Nihalani recently took part in Vienna’s Blk River Festival. The event, which is composed of three parts – outdoor projects, an art show, and film festival – is the city’s first festival dedicated to street art. Know Hope sent us this fantastic time lapse of a collaboration piece with Aakash alongside the waters of the Danube (known as the Black River because it originates in the Black Forest and empties into the Black Sea). After you’ve checked it out, take […]

Video: Robert Williams x Vans Vault Project

We already brought you a preview of Robert Williams upcoming show at Tony Shafrazi Gallery, but here is a look at another associated project he is working on.  In collaboration with Vans Vault, he will be releasing 13 pairs of shoes with artwork from the show at DQM on Halloween, same night as his exhibition opening.  The video actually takes you through the entire process beginning with Williams working on the canvas to the screen-printing and the making of the shoe in the factory… Via […]
