Preview/Setup: Dennis McNett – “Year Of The Wolfbat” @ Thinkspace Gallery

New York City’s Dennis McNett, who teaches printmaking at the Pratt Institute, is in Los Angeles to present “Year of the Wolfbat” at Thinkspace Gallery, a special two-day show opening tomorrow, Saturday, August 8th from 7-11PM. AM dropped by the gallery while the work was going up and got a good look at the complex imagery, insane animals and patterns that make up his work. Dennis is going all out for this show, taking over the entire gallery space and filling it with pieces presented […]

Openings: Scribble.08 Film Screening and Art Exhibition – San Diego Comic-Con 2009

AM enjoyed the screening of the art film “Scribble.08” and coinciding art show alongside artists James Jean (interviewed), Tim Biskup, Jeff Soto (interviewed), Bwana Spoons, Mari Inukai and the rest of the crowd held at Wonderhaus during Comic-Con 2009. The 48-minute documentary directed by Mark Murphy features a series of intriguing interviews with an amazing group of artists: Camille Rose Garcia, Jeff Soto, Joe Sorren, Kevin Christy, Martha Rich, The Clayton Brothers (studio visit) and Tim Biskup. It was great to get a personal look […]

Openings: “Mom & Popism” @ Gawker HQ

This past Tuesday night, AM was on hand on the rooftop of Gawker Headquarters to cover the private preview party for the exciting collaboration exhibit “Mom & Popism“ (previewed), conceived and curated by Billi Kid. This unique project between Gawker Artists and authors/photographers, Jim & Karla Murray, served to enlarge some of the classic “mom and pop” storefronts seen in the Murray’s book, “Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York.” These works, which culturally and ethnically defined many parts of NYC, were remixed with the help of a select group […]

Releases: David Choe – “Choegal Siamese Twin”

Next week, David Choe will be dropping the latest and arguably the illest version of his “Choegal” art figure, this time re-versioned as a Siamese twin. The hand-painted figures, total edition size of 500, cost $65 and will be available through Ningyoushi and DoublePunch. A look at the other side of the face and the packaging after the jump.

Streets: Hugh Leeman – “Recognition” @ White Walls

At about two in the morning last Sunday, AM met up with Hugh Leeman in the heart of San Francisco’s seedy Tenderloin district as he was preparing for his upcoming show, “Recognition” at the esteemed White Walls Gallery.  For the past few months, San Franciscans have been greeted citywide by Leeman’s unique wheatpastes, each depicting a member of the local homeless population.  Leeman, who befriends and helps support his subjects, often times by giving away free clothing, has been embarking on a massive social street-level […]

Preview: Bob Dob – “Black Eyed Mouseketeers” @ Perihelion Arts

Looks like these mouseketeer buddies of Bob Dob were on the wrong side of a beat down.  He did ten variants on this theme for his show “Black Eyed Mouseketeers” opening at Perihelion Arts in Phoenix tomorrow night.  Of course, he had to include the little devil “Luey” in the mix as well.  See him and some more of the images after the jump…

Showing: Nicoletta Ceccoli – “Beauties and Beasts” & Eric Fortune – “Daughters of our Nature” @ Roq La Rue

Two artists whose work we enjoy immensely, Nicoletta Ceccoli (interviewed) & Eric Fortune (interviewed) opened up their joint show a couple weekends ago at Roq La Rue.  Ceccoli’s delicate attention to detail in and her clever juxtaposition of humans and nature (above) along with Fortune’s patient brushwork and mastery of textures/motions were on full display.  If you are lucky enough to be in the Seattle area, definitely take this opportunity to check out not one but two extraordinary artists. See some closer views after the […]

NYT’s Art Critic Reviews Os Gemeos Mural

Earlier this week, the New York Times published a glowing review by esteemed art critic Roberta Smith of the recently completed mural by Os Gemeos (covered). Other than being mistaken about this being the twins’ first public artwork in Manhattan (first legal public artwork, perhaps), Smith gets everything else right, describing the stunning work in loving detail. It’s not everyday that the “Old Gray Lady” gives such accolades to street artists, so congrats to Os Gemeos. Well deserved. Discuss Os Gemeos here.

Rolling Stone’s Obama Cover by Shepard Fairey

The August 20th issue of Rolling Stone will feature a cover with a new image of Barack Obama by Shepard Fairey.  Unlike the idealistic iconic image that a nation of Obama supporters fell in love with, the latest by Fairey incorporates elements that show the situation that the President is currently in. As the artist puts it: “it’s one thing to be running for president and it’s another to be President, and I think this new illustration that I did hopefully captures the complexity and […]
