Preview: “Self-Portraits” @ Circle Culture Gallery

AM was lucky enough to get an advance look at what will surely be the most sought after pieces at “Self-Portraits,” Circle Culture Gallery’s latest offering opening tomorrow, Friday, June 5th in Berlin. Seen above is JR’s “Self-Portrait in a Woman’s Eye, Kenya” from the 28 Millimetres series and is a brilliant use of a subject to capture an image of himself. The idea for the show was to approach the historical theme of self-portraits and to bring it into a contemporary art context. See […]

Openings: Mike Davis & Heidi Taillefer @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Last Saturday, the Joshua Liner Gallery hosted the opening of shows by two talented painters, Mike Davis and Heidi Taillefer. Although the two are seemingly very different, the pairing of Davis and Taillefer begins to make perfect sense once one sees the work together. Both artists work in oil, are very technically proficient and could be labeled “pop-surrealists.”  But beyond that, both incorporate their surrealist imagery within more classical styles of painting. Davis is obviously highly influenced by the Dutch Masters, so much so that […]

Openings: Slinkachu – “Whatever Happened to the Men of Tomorrow” @ Andipa Gallery

Anyone who has watched the recently released movie “Watchmen” will recognize the themes behind images of fat and balding superheros in miniature photographer and artist Slinkachu’s newest show. AM brings you coverage from the special preview of his show “Whatever Happened to the Men of Tomorrow” at Andipa Gallery. The UK “street” artist, who first gained fame for his “Little People Project” (photographs of tiny models in the streets of London), named this show after Alan Moore’s similarly named book which explores what happens to […]

Preview/Setup: Know Hope – “the times won’t save you (this rain smells of memory)” @ Carmichael Gallery

AM stopped by the Carmichael Gallery to check out the progress of Israeli street artist Know Hope’s first Los Angeles solo debut “the times won’t save you (this rain smells of memory)” (teased) opening tomorrow, Thursday, June 4th. His intricate gallery installation, comprised of paper raindrops, fishing twine and a lot of cardboard was really coming together. We were equally impressed with Know Hope’s new work for the show. His large mixed-media pieces just keep getting better and we were delightfully surprised to see that […]

Openings: Josh Keyes – “Sprout” @ David B. Smith Gallery

AM made the trip out to Denver this past weekend to check out the much anticipated solo show entitled “Sprout” from one of our favorite artists, Josh Keyes, at the David B. Smith Gallery. It was great to finally see the pieces in person since we only had studio shots up till this point. Josh was also kind enough to sign some show cards for our readers. Read on for our in-depth look at the show, details of the giveaway and see all the photographs, […]

Releases: James Jean x Pressure Printing – “Kindling”

When it comes to limited edition releases, one of the best in the game is Pressure Printing. This time they have teamed up with James Jean (interviewed) to produce this beautiful hand-finished print entitled “Kindling” (named after his last solo show) in a super-limited run of 10 (plus 5 Artist’s Proofs, 5 Printer’s Proofs, and 1 Bon á tirer).  No word how much this will go for yet but one will go into Asian Art Musuem’s permanent collection and a benefit auction by Hayao Miyazaki […]

Preview: Ryan McGinley @ Team Gallery – Basel Week Switzerland

Kicking off our coverage of Art Basel Switzerland, we take a look at the work of Ryan McGinley, quite simply one of the best photographers of his generation and a name you should know and keep an eye out for. His credentials and accolades are impressive and numerous, including being the youngest artist ever to have a solo show at the Whitney (2003), being named Photographer of the Year in 2003 by American Photo Magazine and capturing the Young Photographer Infinity Award by the International Center […]

Preview: Charming Baker “The Meaning of Everything” London Exhibition

It’s good to see our friend Charming Baker, whom we met last year at an LA group show, back in the spotlight. He sent us this addictive video featuring his artwork with the song “Some People Might Think You Look Ridiculous” by The Beautiful South. You can check out this painting at his upcoming show “The Meaning of Everything” at 50 Redchurch Street, London E2 7. This new body of work is a solo exhibition of new paintings and prints. The show runs from June 5th […]

Shepard Fairey x Arkitip – Launch Party & Installation @ ALIFE (Hollywood)

As we previously reported, Arkitip is putting out a special collaboration issue with Shepard Fairey and the release is right around the corner. To celebrate the launch of Issue 51 and all it’s Obey goodies, ALIFE is transforming their Hollywood retail location into a mini-gallery to host the release with Mr. Fairey. A giant 14 x 48 ft. billboard specifically designed by Shepard for the event will be erected directly above the store and the inside of the location itself will be transformed with a site specific installation. In […]
