Saturday night, AM had the pleasure of attending the openings of two exciting new shows at Chelsea’s Joshua Liner Gallery. In the main gallery was the “Further” group exhibition, which features Damon Soule, David Choong Lee, MARS-1, Nome Edonna, Oliver Vernon, Robert Hardgrave and Tomokazu Matsuyama. The recent appointment of Jeffrey Deitch as the new Director of MOCA has spurred much rumor and speculation regarding the continued operation of Deitch Projects and their scheduled exhibitions. It has been confirmed by the museum and by Mr. Deitch himself that all commercial activity on his end will cease by June 1, 2010, meaning Deitch Projects as we all know it will shutter. Seeing that Phil Frost’s epic show at the PRISM with Barry McGee is still showing, it’s good timing for him to collaborate with Undefeated, mega clothing and lifestyle brand, on their billboard project. Frost joins the long list of luminaries such as Kehinde Wiley, Robert Williams, Jose Parla, Os Gemeos, Kaws, and Raymond Pettibon in designing the sign above the Undefeated store location on La Brea in Los Angeles. Krista Huot (interviewed) opened her first-ever solo show this past weekend at Gallery1988SF. AM was on hand the day of the opening to catch up with Krista as she was putting the finishing touches on her latest body of work. “Nepenthe,” an ancient drug used to cure sorrow and depression through forgetfulness, is truly a fitting name. Another show we are looking forward to in March is Andrew Schoultz’s solo in Italy at the Jerome Zodo Contemporary. Entitled “Crisis,” the exhibition opens on March 11th and will include this amazing large scale (11′ x 24′) piece “Monument Yard. (Monument to Turbulent Times)” which was about one and a half years in the making. We’ve been following the work of Brooklyn artist Kevin Cyr for a little while now and we were excited to hear that he has a new body of work appearing at Raandesk Gallery of Art in New York. “Behind the Curtain” also features Jason Bryant, whom Cyr met whilst they were both working as assistants for Kehinde Wiley. Streets: Banksy vs. Robbo not finished

It looks as though Robbo and his crew have painted over another one of Banksy’s pieces in Camden. If you remember, what set off this confrontation was Banksy painting over one of Robbo’s historical throwups, which was over 20 years old (although the feud probably had its origins from even earlier). On Friday, January 29, 2010, Larry Gagosian is hosting a benefit auction at his gallery in New York City in support of The Family Resource Center of The Partnership for the Homeless. The event is co-chaired by artist Richard Serra and his wife Clara and the Principal Auctioneer is Tobias Meyer, Worldwide Head of Contemporary Art at Sotheby’s.
