Morgan Slade opened his new show, “Fist of Fear, Touch of Death” last weekend at San Francisco’s Shooting Gallery. Featuring ten new large scale photographs, Morgan’s latest body of work is most striking and provided a great introduction of his work to the Bay Area. His subjects, faceless models donning football helmets, stormtrooper masks, and mascot heads, pose playfully though it’s their anonymity and resulting lack of true beauty that perhaps grants such freedoms as modern day morettas. Camille Rose Garcia The best show no one is talking about right now is the “Who Killed The Music” Grammy group show coming up next week. AM was in Chelsea last night for the latest much-anticipated solo show by Josh Keyes (interviewed), entitled “Fragment,” at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. As expected, the large crowd was blown away by Keyes’ newest series of realistic-stylized portrayals of animals battling for survival against a hostile environment. We recently took you to Mike Shine’s studio where he was getting ready for this weekend’s show at SFMOMA, but he’s not the only artist who was working on an exhibition there. Barry McGee was also installing some works in preparation for the 75th anniversary show at SFMOMA, where they have championed Mission School artists like Mr. Twist over the years. Aakash Nihalani will be bringing his unique use of colored tape as a geometric artform to the Carmichael Gallery for a joint show with Mark Jenkins on January 21st. From the sound of things, attendees of the show, entitled “On & Off (Often On)”, will be seeing something fresh and exciting from Aakash for this new body of work. AM had the honor this past weekend of visiting Mike Shine‘s historic “surf shack” as the artist was preparing for his latest installation, opening today at SFMoMA. Nestled away in the heart of Bolinas, Mike Shine has created for himself the ideal Nordic retreat, the perfect getaway for him and his family of artists. Andrew Hem (interviewed) is opening an expansive show tonight at LeBasse Projects featuring paintings, drawings, and sculptural work. Entitled “One Leads to Another,” the exhibition was influenced extensively by his recent trip to Cambodia. Through his artwork, Andrew asks what if the millions of people that died during the Khmer Rouge period, especially the children had lived on instead? How might things have been different? Mark Jenkins, who recently did some work in Moscow, will be returning to the States for a show at the Carmichael Gallery. He’ll be bringing in some fresh installation art like the “Spokes” piece seen above for his show entitled “Meaning is Overrated.” Definitely mark down January 21st and plan to attend the opening as he will be showing with another great artist – Aakash Nihalani. Ryan McGinley, famed photographer, but also aspiring feature film director, recently directed a video (watch it after the jump) for luxury knitwear brand Pringle of Scotland.
