Streets: Daan Botlek (Berlin)

Dutch artist Daan Botlek has recently moved to Germany and after a few weeks of life in one of the street art’s capitals, he picked up his tools and went painting in public again. Recently, he was wandering around the abandoned Wuhlheide train station in Berlin, looking for interesting spots to paint. For the ones familiar with his public works, his interventions hugely depend on the environment and the possibilities of the location. He often uses architectural elements in order to create simple illusions, making his super flat and […]

Previews: Jacub Gagnon – “World’s Collide” @ Thinkspace

Looking ahead to June, one of the exhibitions we will be looking forward to comes from Jacub Gagnon’s (interviewed) return (see 2012) to Thinkspace. The new show entitled World’s Collide will feature vivid & surreal portraits of the natural world, interacting in unique ways with objects and other creatures, often in clever associations or with plays of proportion. Head over for the opening at the Culver City gallery on June 21st if you are in town – also showing will be Brian Mashburn and Erica Rose […]

Openings: D*Face – “Honestly Dishonest” @ Above Second

During Basel HK week, another major show we hit was from British artist D*Face (interviewed) at Hong Kong’s Above Second Gallery. Presented by Coates & Scarry, the solo entitled Honestly Dishonest featured 18 fresh works focusing on society’s increasing appetite for information. D put together layers of the commercial output which bombard our minds on a daily basis, creating something new and different in and of itself. The sold out show was filled with Basel week attendees and fans. Next, we’ll bring you some of the outdoor murals he created while he was in town. Discuss D*Face here.

Releases: Borondo – “Identity” Print

After scratching, spraying and painting his recognizable mark on walls, windows, bus stops, and under bridges around London and other parts of Europe, Borondo just finished working on his next print. In collaboration with StreetArtNews.net, he is releasing this limited, hand painted/drawn screen print. Based on a previously created street piece, this edition features a unique portrait with a drawing and  hand painted coloring, making each of them fully unique. The expressive image shows a faceless man, holding a paper with a drawing of a face with evident […]

Showing: “Paper Cuts” @ Spoke Art

A couple of weeks back, AM got to spend some time in and around San Francisco. One of the exhibitions on the calendar was Spoke Art’s group exhibition Paper Cuts. Curated by Jessica Ross, the show features eatures an array of 11 international artists each working with cut paper (natch) but with a variety of styles, techniques and of course end results. The art of paper cutting is traditionally a very unforgiving medium. There’s no eraser or additional layer of paint to disguise a mistake in […]

Showing: Jacob Hashimoto – “Gas Giant” @ MOCA

After providing you with a sneak peak setup look at Jacob Hashimoto’s MOCA Pacific Design Center installation, we are happy to be able to share images of the finished Gas Giant exhibition. The massive work seemingly alters the cube-like interior space of the PDC venue into a immersive, sublime, and otherworldly experience. Using traditional kite-making techniques and thousands of thin paper sheets attached to supports and string, the artist painstakingly collages the components into a sculptural environment whose whole definitely exceeds the sum of it […]

Previews: Vhils – “Dissection” @ EDP Foundation

After leaving his mark all over the globe, from wooden sheds in Brazilian rain forest (covered) to large warehouses in Hawaii (covered), Alexandre Farto aka Vhils is opening a museum solo in his homeland. Supported by the EDP Foundation, Dissesction will be opening on the the 5th of July 2014 at the Electricity Museum in Lisbon, as “the first solo exhibition by Vhils in a Portuguese mainstream art institution and his largest to date.” The artist who made his name by chiseling walls with heavy tools and explosives as […]

Openings: Ryan McGinness – “Figure Drawings” @ Pace Prints

Ryan McGinness is back at Pace Prints after a seven year hiatus, but to say he’s been busy since would be an understatement. The New York-based artist, whose work stems primarily from skate and design culture has gone on to massive acclaim in that seven year stint, from further exploring his skate influences with the MOMA to his explosive show in the last days of Deitch Projects and let’s not forget all the projects in between. His latest solo show, humbly titled Figure Drawing, is way beyond just that, and without question continues to […]

Learn more about the film in […]

Streets: Pejac (Spain)

Spanish artist Pejac (featured), recently created this fantastic new outdoor piece in his hometown of Santander in Spain. More of an intervention than just a painting, this piece is called Wallcanvas and was created as a tribute to Lucio Fontana and his cut-off paintings.  In the same manner that the infamous Italian artist was creating cuts in canvases, giving the material a mysterious sense of illusion and depth, the creative Barcelona-based street artist did something similar with the rough concrete wall. In order to achieve the full effect of […]
