Previews: Ryan McGinley – “Winter” @ Team Gallery (New York)

Tomorrow night in New York, Ryan McGinley will be opening a new solo entitled Winter at Team Gallery’s Soho location. Continuing his series of road trip photo shoots with friends, these new images feature nude figures in upstate New York during the the dead of cold season requiring a mixture of audacity and sacrifice from the participants. The vulnerable forms juxtaposed again frozen and barren landscapes leads to a certain sadness, something that is different than the summer trips he has documented in the past. The exhibition […]

Upcoming: Barry McGee – “China Boo” @ Ratio 3

Half a year since his last show with Todd James at V1 gallery in Copenhagen (covered), Barry McGee will opening a China Boo at Ratio 3 in San Francisco. The last time he showed with the gallery was back in 2008 with a exhibition entitled A Moment for Reflection: New Work by Lydia Fong. As per usual with the Bay Area-based artist, there is very limited pre-info available about this event, but it seems that he is also curating another group show that will include works by a large group of international friends and artists. […]

Based on the pieces shown at the Dematerialized: A New Contemporary Vision show, Lady T and Old Master #11 were recently recently produced and signed by the Italian artists. Streets: INTI x Alexis Diaz // O.bra Festival (Sao Paulo)

Recently in Sao Paulo, Chilean artist INTI combined his talents with Alexis Diaz, who hails from Puerto Rico, to create a new mural. Painted for the O.bra Festival, the wall highlights INTI’s characteristic palette as well as Diaz’s attention to detail to form a pretty interesting collaboration. Set to coincide with the week of ArtRua, the event wasn’t the only thing of interest to us (also see Titi Freak & Brusk). Discuss INTI here. Discuss Alexis Diaz here.

Halloween is barely over and Greg “Craola” Simkins (featured) is already looking to Thanksgiving, or did he just combine both? The Gobbler is a 20″ x 20″ print just released by the Los Angeles-based artist and is a fine example of his surrealistic artistic vision. Produced in an edition of 30, the signed and numbered giclee can be yours for $165. Head over here if you are interested. Discuss Craola here.

Upcoming: David Welker – “Subconscious Narrative” @ Hoerle-Guggenheim Gallery

On November 19th, the Hoerle-Guggenheim Gallery in New York will be hosting a new show from David Welker entitled Subconscious Narrative. The locally-based artist has certainly made his name in the concert poster scene, but has now set his sights on the gallery world for the freedom to further expand his surrealistic imagery. Judging from the hard work he has put in and the paintings we have seen already, Welker is well on his way to making a memorable first impression. He further states about the new body of […]

Streets: Blu (Rome)

While the street art scene and the public mural-making trend is peaking these days through numerous festivals around the world, there are still artists out there that like to do things on their own. One of these is certainly the Italian legend Blu who just revealed his his newest mural painted in Rome the other day. After taking a break for a few months due to injury, the Bologna-based street artist recently finished painting a new wall on a six story building in the Italian capital. With the […]

Previews: Gil Batle – “Hatched In Prison” @ Ricco/Maresca

On November 5th, Hatched In Prison will open at Ricco/Maresca in New York, a testament to the long road Gil Batle has traveled and where art has taken him. Born and raised in San Francisco to Filipino parents, he has been in and out of five California prisons for eight years over a twenty year period. While incarcerated, the self-taught artist’s drawing ability and eventual tattooing skills shielded him from the murderous gang violence that ran rampant behind bars. Now living on a small island in the Philippines, Batle has […]
