Openings: TOYKIO Gallery & Café

At the beginning of this year, we brought you photos of the pop-up location of TOYKIO Gallery & café while they worked feverishly to get their main space set up for their official launch. Well, if the pop-up brought the bang, then this new location brings the boom! We just got word that Toykio finally opened their doors to their luxurious duplex location. The upstairs houses a beautiful café while downstairs you can see some art work from familiar names like Banksy, JR, Mark Ryden, Shepard Fairey,Ron English, Ricky Powell, Swoon, D*Face, and […]

Videos: JR – Inside Out Project

This spring, when JR announced that his Ted Prize wish was to “Use Art to Turn the World Inside Out” he really wasn’t joking. Using people to participate is the key and the goal is to make this the world’s largest participatory art project and since this initiative began, portraits have reached citizens on almost every continent. For review, the concept is simple. Go to the Inside Out website (here), upload your portrait so JR can send you a printout for you to wheatpaste to […]

Studio Visits: Jeremy Fish

With the last week of Jeremy Fish’s (featured) Listen and Learn exhibition (covered) coming to a close at Joshua Liner Gallery, we bring you an inside look at Mr. Fish’s San Francisco studios when we visited the artist earlier this year as he was getting ready for the show. Remember this is the last week, if you haven’t made a stop to catch this show, do so before it closes this Saturday. Check out the full set taken for us by Joe Russo after the jump.

Openings: Dan Witz – “Mosh Pits, Human and Otherwise” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Opening alongside Brett Amory’s solo at Jonathan LeVine Gallery was also Dan Witz’s Mosh Pits, Human and Otherwise. This show featured the Brooklyn-based artist and his hyper-realistic painting style where he applies old master techniques to create incredibly vibrant and detailed works. We saw his signature large-scale oil paintings which feature Witz’s crazy and energy packed mosh pits as well as some works from his illuminated series. Check out this great body of work after the jump.

Openings: Hikari Shimoda – “Me, as in the Beast Coat” @ Foley Gallery

AM caught the opening featuring Hikari Shimoda when the Japanese artist exhibited at New York’s Foley Gallery. The show Me, as in the Beast Coat was a intriguing series or paintings that explored the complex themes of adolescence and how young adults strive to cope with the reality of growing into their situation. Using cute childhood imagery in uneasy and lonely landscapes, Shimoda conveys the warped attitudes towards the outer world with the hollowed eyes representing the yet to be developed insides that struggle to […]

Openings: Aaron Young – “Built Tough” @ Bortolami Gallery

AM recently caught Aaron Young’s New York Solo Built Tough at Bortolami Gallery. The show was a departure from the motorcycle etchings we typically see by Young as he tackled the motif of America and its symbols with new body of works that included sculptures, paintings, and silkscreens. Check it all out after the jump.

Openings: Brett Amory – “Dark Light” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

AM recently attended the opening of Brett Amory’s (interviewed) latest NY solo Dark Light (previewed) at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. This new series of paintings is a departure from Brett’s daytime series as the subjects are based in the still of night. However, Brett transitions his subjects and urban environments effortlessly into the emptiness of nocturnal darkness. We felt the lost and lonely feelings which we usually experienced in Brett’s works, but with the sun taken away, it felt even a little eerie as desolation wrapped around his signature […]

Openings: Jeremy Fish – “Listen and Learn” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

A couple weeks ago, AM caught the opening of Jeremy Fish’s (featured) exhibition at the Joshua Liner Gallery. The show Listen and Learn showcased not only the bold and complex characters that make up Jeremy’s cartoon-like style, but also the stories of multiple angles told from the viewpoints of different people from all walks of life. With the Snoop Dogg collaboration video we teased you with for comparison, you can see the diversity of focus as the other subjects included skateboarders, strippers, athletes, and more. Each person not […]

Previews: Shepard Fairey – “Citykids” @ Wooster Street Social Club

You may remember last year during the finals days of Deitch Projects, Shepard Fairey (featured) held his solo exhibition May Day in New York. What you may not have seen was a special community mural project he created with the Citykids Foundation. AM was on hand to capture Shepard and his crew engaging intercity youths to create a series of twelve 8 x 4 foot panels as part of the A Positive Thought Cannot Be Denied project. From July 6th to July 18th, the Wooster Street Social Club […]
