Releases: Anish Kapoor x illy Art Collection

Finally after years of hoping and wanting, we got an Anish Kapoor dish… coffee cup and dish that is. Italian Coffee maker illy has commissioned the famous Indian artist to design this year’s artist cup for their prestigious Art Collection which has seen collaborations with some of art’s most celebrated artists such as Jeff Koons, Louise Bourgeois and Robert Rauschenberg. At first glance, one may notice that this cup and saucer garners the same perfectly polished metallic surface that we’ve come to expect from many of Kapoor’s iconic […]

Openings: Tauba Auerbach – “A Book Is Not An X” @ John McWhinnie & GHB

On Friday, Tauba Auerbach unveiled a truly unique body of work at John McWhinnie @ GHB in East Hampton, NY. The show entitled A Book Is Not An X (previewed) is a play on a statement she made last year in an Artforum review of Carsten Nicolai’s book Grid Index: “a book is an X-axis. The format is almost always linear; the content, bound in a prescribed order, marches single file.” For this exhibition Tauba created six “books” and each plays on this notion and […]

Openings: Olek – The Bad Artists Imitate, The Great Artists Steal @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

It’s been a while since we’ve caught up with artist Agata Oleksiak aka Olek. Last time, she took on Wall Street and its famous charging bull and this time, she’s exhibiting her works in a solo at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. The show title The Bad Artist Imitate, The Great Artists Steal may sound familiar because you probably saw it mentioned most recently from Banksy at his Bristol Museum show and previously from master Pablo Picasso. Being a performance artist, she got a few helpers to become […]

Openings: Olson Olson Recine & Ass @ Nyehaus

AM recently caught the opening of a very unique show entitled Olson Olson Recine & Ass at New York’s Nyehaus. Sounds kinda like a law firm right? Well, that’s the point as this group show was titled by a father/son duo Steve & Alex Olson. The central theme of exhibition was the wheel, so whether it was riding a skateboard or motorcycle, the artists Phil Frost, Curtis Kulig, Yaniv Evan, Bob Recine and the previously mentioned duo have always been rolling in perpetual motion. Another cool […]

Openings: Square Enix – “Deux Ex: Human Revolution” @ Wooster St. Social Club

Artists such as Estevan Oriol, Sam Flores, Patrick Martinez and Jeremy Fish created game themed posters for the event, each with a small edition of 20 with proceeds benefiting art education. The party of course was a blast as we got to play advance copies of the new Deux Ex software on both XBOX & PS3 as we got our Dave & […]

Openings: MS Fundraiser for Tim Strazza @ Joshua Liner Gallery

We all hit bumps in the road, but with a little help we can all overcome any obstacles. As mentioned previously, a good friend of AM and assistant director of Joshua Liner Gallery, Tim Strazza, was unfortunately diagnosed with a Multiple Sclerosis. We helped sponsor a fundraiser created by the gallery to generate funds that went to support Tim and his medical bills. It seemed that almost everyone came out of the woodworks to donate artwork for the charity auction including a heavy rotation of […]

Openings: “Oniomania” @ Martha Otero

This past weekend, AM stopped by to catch a fresh exhibition at Martha Otero Gallery. As explained in our preview, the curiously titled Oniomania means “to compulsively buy”. In this case, the group show was filled with pieces that would drive an art shopaholic wild as such notables as John Baldessari, Ed Ruscha, James Jean, David Choe, Jen Stark, FriendsWithYou, Darren Romanelli, Chris Beas, Jonathan Borofsky, Liz Craft, Sebastian Clough, Wim Delvoye, Lia Halloran, Adam Janes, Brand Kahlhamer, Donald Lipski, Bruce Nauman and Jason Polan had […]
