Openings: Sylvia Ji – “Las Adelitas” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

This past Saturday, AM attended the opening of Sylvia Ji’s (interviewed) “Las Adelitas” at Joshua Liner Gallery. The solo exhibition is Sylvia’s first in New York (previewed). Showcasing her signature Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) portraiture style, she honed in on the theme of “Las Adelitas”: the female fighters of the Mexican Revolution. Seeing her works in person gave us a whole new level of appreciation for the west coast artist. The eyes of her characters constantly draw the attention of the […]

Previews: Travis Louie – “Curious Myths” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

This Saturday, Joshua Liner Gallery is prepped to showcase Travis Louie’s (featured) latest body of work entitled “Curious Myths”, the first solo show for Mr. Louie at the New York space. Looks like there will be 15 of Travis’ astonishing acrylic on panel pieces on display. It looks to be a doozy judging from this teaser pic of a large piece he’s working on (with two hands no less). Don’t worry, we’ll be on hand to witness the magic and document everything for you.  But […]

Second Helpings: June 2010

Summer is off to a blazing start as June sets the pace with a flurry of crazy shows. From the old schoolers to new comers, it seems that everyone is getting into it this month. Here’s another look back as the staff at AM brings you a look back at the juiciest stories of this past month. Get served after the jump.

Openings: Guy Denning & David Walker – “Surface Tension” @ Brooklynite Gallery

AM recently took a visit into Bedstuy’s Brooklynite Gallery to hang out and see their latest show “Surface Tension”. The exhibition comprised of works from two artists whose works seemingly take different directions. David Walker’s brighter palates and literal/photo-realistic portraits are created without a single brushstroke; in fact, only spray paint is used. The faces seemed to come together between the metallic and bright hues. On the other side of the coin we also enjoyed Guy Denning’s darker and deeper figurative painting. Utilizing oil and turpentine, […]

Openings: Dave Cooper – “Mangle” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

Last Saturday night, Dave Cooper opened his solo alongside Jeff Soto in NY at Jonathan LeVine’s Gallery in Chelsea. As usual, Cooper produced a fascinating body of work that would interest any BBW lover with lush and strangely compelling paintings of billowy and fleshy women frolicking in and out of disturbing scenarios. The subjects appear to be contortionists as well to the highest degree, populating a vast world filled with vaguely sensual and uncomfortable scenarios. Perhaps the subject matter is best explained in the artists […]

Make Something Workshops and Nike are getting together to support the arts by creating a series of handson workshops to inspire teenagers between 13-18 years. And, it all […]

Openings: “Not Quite Open for Business” @ The Hole

Earlier last week we gave you a sneak preview of the gallery space that is likely to contend as the heir apparent to the famed Deitch Projects. On Saturday night “The Hole” officially opened its doors for it’s anticipated inaugural show “Not Quite Open for Business”. As the titled indicated the launch had a flair all it’s own with many fresh but “not quite finished” creations that matched the crispy new space. Launching in the heart of Soho between Prince and Spring, it seemed as though many of […]

Preview: KAWS x Medicom – Pinocchio & Jiminy Cricket

Yesterday, we gave you a detailed look at KAWS’ first ever museum exhibition at the The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum. Simply mind boggling right? With the amount of great artwork and stunning installations, we almost missed this lone prototype vinyl figure encased on a simple pedestal. Upon closer inspection we noticed it was Pinocchio reworked in a style that only KAWS could do. Next to it was a museum info card: “Pinocchio and Jiminy Cricket, 2010 – Produced by Medicom Toy, Copyright Disney”. The million dollar […]

Video: Herakut – “Happy Doubt Day” @ Galerie Springmann.Varol

Our friend Frankie just sent us this dope video created by Herakut (interviewed) recapping the freshness that was their show “Happy Doubt Day” at  Galerie Springmann.Varol. Much like the video that Hera posted last year, you get to see their amazing artwork get animated as the dynamic duo brings this show to life. Discuss this show here. Discuss Herakut here.

Openings: KAWS @ Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum

Yesterday, AM attended the exhibition opening of Brooklyn-based artist and designer Brian Donnelly, a.k.a KAWS, at the The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, CT. The first ever solo museum exhibition for the famed urban contemporary artist was nothing short of inspiring. Mixing one part retrospective and one part fresh works created a dynamic survey of a career that has influenced a range of design and popular culture. From his humble street/graffiti origins to graphic/vinyl design work to his current relevance in the world of […]
