Showing: Robert Lazzarini – “The Return Of The Real” @ USF Contemporary Art Museum

On view through December 7th at the in USF Contemporary Art Museum in Tampa Bay, The Return Of The Real features the eye bending work of Robert Lazzarini (and Rodrigo Valenzuela). The New York-based artist distorts reality with his sculptural “re-presentations”, encouraging viewers to question what they’re seeing in our “era increasingly dominated by fabricated fears, alternative facts and fake news.” Take a look at more photos below… Photo credit: @tpilote, Art In Your Ear, the artist and gallery.

Showing: Travis Louie – “Biodiversity” @ Roq La Rue

Last week in Seattle, Travis Louie (interviewed) opened a new show at Roq La Rue entitled Biodiversity. Taking the title to the extreme, the New York-based artist has included real and imaginary creatures into the variety and variability of life on Earth, all rendered in his unique technique. Typically posing his characters in Victorian garb, Louie’s meticulously painted portraits mimic the aesthetics of vintage photography, despite the surreal imagery. A carefully constructed and entertaining backstory usually accompanies each piece, an example of which corresponds to the painting above – “The reluctant […]

Tonight in Los Angeles, Kenny Scharf (interviewed) will be unveiling a new body of work entitled Optimistically Melting! at Honor Fraser Gallery. The California-born artist, who first made his name on the streets of New York four decades ago, has prepared a few series of works for this exhibition. First on the list are a set of paintings featuring his signature trippy and cartoonish imagery, but applied to a motif he has rarely explored before – still life. Like the rest of the show, there is a sense […]

Showing: Casey Gray – “Still Blue Skies” @ Direktorenhaus

Showing since the beginning of summer, Still Blue Skies at Direktorenhaus in Berlin features a new collection of paintings and sculptures from Casey Gray. Taking a cue from 17th century Dutch and Flemish masters, the mainly acrylic spray paint and fluid acrylic on panel pieces from the San Francisco-based artist are multi-layered, full of color, and reveals a deft touch with the trompe l’oeil technique – “a metaphor and coping mechanism for the superficiality and disillusion of the digital age.” Created with everyday objects and “artifacts mined from the depths […]

Entitled Avalon, the exhibition will no doubt include pieces like the one above (Gleaner Odalisque) that feature the American artist’s signature broom figure as well as other works that reference a range from the history of painting (ie: Symbolism, Surrealism, and Pop Art) to Art Nouveau graphics to animation. Underlying all of Smith’s work are subtle feminist ideals of which “Exhibit A” is her choice of […]
