Showing: Kelsey Brookes – “Psychedelic Space” @ Quint Gallery

Currently at Quint Gallery in La Jolla is a showing from Kelsey Brookes that coincides with the release of his new book Psychedelic Space. On display are a series of paintings and prints as well as a video that explains his recent series of works that use the molecular structures of neurotransmitters and psychedelic substances as their starting point. Previews: Paul Wackers – “New Alphabet” @ Alice Gallery

After a showing there in 2012, Paul Wackers will be returning to Brussels for another showing at Alice Gallery. The American artist has a new body of work to present entitled New Alphabet, and has been living in the capital of Belgium at the Encore space next to the gallery. Fans who attend the opening later tonight (September 17th) can expect to see his modern take on still life paintings, full color and monochromatic. Discuss Paul Wackers here.

Upcoming: Anish Kapoor x Ai Weiwei Refugee Walk (London)

Tomorrow (September 17th) in London, Anish Kapoor and Ai Weiwei will be joining forces for a walk to bring awareness to the 60 million refugees in our world today. Each will carry a blanket as a symbol and everyone who is interested is invited to join them with a blanket as well. These actions will be repeated by the artists in different cities around the world in upcoming months. Streets: RISK @ ArtCenter College of Design (Los Angeles)

Last week, Los Angeles graffiti legend RISK finished a mural (arranged by LeBasse Projects) at the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena. The new piece featuring his “Beautifully Destroyed” aesthetic is part of the OUTSIDEIN, an indoor and outdoor exhibition that will focus graffiti-based mural painting that will eventually grow to include work from Olivia Bevilacqua, David Flores, Chase, Robbie Conal, Cryptik, Jeanne Detallante, Shepard Fairey, James Jean, Geoff McFetridge, Kenny Scharf, and Jeff Soto. Releases / Upcoming: Jeff Soto – “Owl Of Infinite Knowledge” Print / Murals In The Market

Jeff Soto (interviewed) has just teamed up with 1xRUN for a print release entitled Owl Of Infinite Knowledge. This newest offering from the Riverside-based artist featuring the nocturnal bird of prey is part of the Murals In The Market Featured Artist Print Series, corresponding with the Murals In the Market festival opening later this week. Previews: David Lyle – “Damaged Goods” @ 111 Minna

On October 2nd, David Lyle will be opening a new show at 111 Minna in San Francisco featuring a series of works collectively entitled Damaged Goods. The New York-based artist takes inspiration from found vintage photos which he recreates with a twist, seeding each image with unexpected modern day references. He further states – “These paintings are American moments for our psyches to reflect upon and yet they are personal satirical commentaries of events going on in  and around my life.” Discuss David Lye here.

Openings: Daniel Arsham – “Fictional Archeology” @ Galerie Perrotin (Hong Kong)

Last week in Hong Kong, Daniel Arsham opened a new solo show entitled Fictional Archeology at Galerie Perrotin. Included were eroded sculptures featuring the human form inspired by the mummified remains from the volcanic eruption in Pompeii in 79 A.D, a contemporary look at how we may appear in the event of a similar disaster to future archeologists. Rounding out the show was a smaller version the installation seen last year in Miami (covered), a “future archaeological dig site” of modern day items like shoes, cameras, musical instruments, and phones made from chalk. Streets: D*Face – “Bad Lands” (Fort Smith)

Over the weekend, D*Face (interviewed) completed a mural in Fort Smith, Arkansas, an effort that took five days. Painted for the Unexpected event curated by Just Kids, the piece entitled Badlands features a cowboy astride a horse rendered in the British artist’s comic inspired style. Releases: Mark Jenkins – “Baby” Limited Editions

In association with the new solo from Mark Jenkins (interviewed) that just opened at the Fabien Castanier Gallery in Los Angeles (covered), the artist has released some limited editions through Freeway Editions. The Baby tape sculptures come in four different colors and are produced in a run of 10 each and is something every fan of the American street artist recognizes as the medium that is his original claim to fame.
