Openings: Tomokazu Matsuyama – “New Work” @ Mark Moore Gallery

Just this last weekend, the NY-based Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) opened a new showing at the Mark Moore Gallery. Bringing with him several tondos as well as his irregularly shaped canvases, Matsu filled the project room with a juxtaposition of eastern and western imagery. Mixing things up, the new body of work also included two works on paper that he placed on a hand-painted wall as well as a re-cast of a 18th century erotic Chinese porcelain figure (customized for the Los Angeles area) that he encased in resin. Just a little update for the Bäst fans out there. The NY-based street artist has teamed up with Greek olive oil brand Eléia to create a special edition bottle available for purchase exclusively at Dean & Deluca. This screen-printed bottle was only produced in an edition of 500, and features Bäst’s signature style using iconic imagery. Our Streets: World Roundup returns this week with this collaborative mural from Serbian twins Sobekcis and Zoer at the top of the list. Coming up in October, Shepard Fairey (featured) returns to the StolenSpace Gallery in London for a solo show entitled Sound and Vision. The name of the exhibition is taken from the song of one of his favorite musicians David Bowie and embodies one of the greatest inspirations for Shep’s art – music. Festival Images (Switzerland)

Starting this weekend in Vevey, Switzerland, the Festival Images kicks off with a series of outdoor and indoor projects as well as associated programming. If you remember, the event (held biannually) was anchored by the Unframed project in 2010 from French street photographer JR. Streets: Escif (Peru)

Spanish street artist Escif never seems to stop, with each new mural (often times with a political message) documented on his blog street against. This time, the prolific painter headed over to Cerro de Pasco, Perú to work on a new piece pointing out another injustice. He states – “In order to expand the vast open pit from which the deposits of minerals are extracted, each year entire neighbourhoods in the town are demolished and their residents forced to relocate.” Discuss Escif here.

Installation: Dalek – “Spectrum Analysis” @ Flanders Gallery

Tonight (September 7th) in Raleigh, North Carolina, the Flanders Gallery will be hosting Spectrum Analysis, a showing of new installations from James “Dalek” Marshall (interviewed). Continuing his exploration of abstract geometries, last seen in Orange County in July, Marshall will be filling the showspace with large-scale blue paintings executed on modular panels. Created last year during a residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, these diamond and starburst forms will interspaced with murals painted directly onto the gallery walls.
