Openings: KAWS – “Where The End Starts” @ Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth

Last week, the heavily anticipated major survey exhibition of the work of KAWS opened at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, a followup to a show at the same institution in 2011 (covered). Curator Andrea Karnes and the Brooklyn-based artist carefully chose works that would give a complete look at his career starting from his time on the streets with his now famous bus stop interventions and culminating with works that led to his recent meteoric rise in the contemporary art world. A master at subverting pop culture […]

Streets: Shepard Fairey (Hong Kong)

Over the last week or so, Shepard Fairey (featured) has been in Hong Kong working on a few small pieces in the nooks and crannies of the urban sprawl. The American artist is in town pasting up his imagery on the streets leading up to his show opening up at the HOCA Foundation, his first solo exhibition in the Chinese city-state. The new public murals will continue to spread Shep’s favorite concepts –  “The Medium is the Message” – a phrase coined by Marshall McLuhan to describe how “the form of a medium embeds itself […]

Showing: Maurizio Cattelan – “Not Afraid of Love” @ Monnaie de Paris

Currently showing at Monnaie de Paris, Not Afraid of Love is Maurizio Cattelan’s largest exhibition since his retrospective in New York five years ago (covered). The controversial artist’s largest ever showing in Europe will also be one of his most personal with the works chosen by himself that he considers most life-important and significant. Hosted in the historical institution through January 8th, the Italian artist’s irreverent work will play a sharp contrast to their surroundings. Cattelan further explains his comeback – “This exhibition it’s the very first, after the Guggenheim show, that […]

Openings: Sean Mahan – “Rendered Problematic” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Alongside Sandra Chevrier (interviewed) showing in the main space (covered) of Thinkspace in Los Angeles, Sean Mahan also presented a small solo show in the project room. Entitled Rendered Problematic, the new work from the painter from Florida continued his portraits of children rendered in soft pastels along with nostalgic touches like “vintage palettes handle records, dated appliances, and classic sewing machines.” Mahon further explains this exhibition – “I chose the title Rendered Problematic because it was descriptive of both the rendered illustration style and the conceptual ideas I wanted […]

Streets: SEPE // District Walls (Washington D.C.)

Earlier this month, the District Walls project in Washington D.C. (curated by Art Whino) saw a sweet addition from SEPE entitled Another Brick In The Wall. When considering that the mural is being painted in the US capital and the image showing a clown being crowned, the piece was perfectly timed for the current election cycle. The Polish artist, whose real name is Michał Wręga adds – “In general work refers to the ruthless world of politics and grotesque race for power. I thought it will perfectly fit […]

Openings: Sandra Chevrier – “The Cages; and the Reading Rooms of their Lives”

Last weekend, Thinkspace in Los Angeles opened a solo show from Sandra Chevrier (interviewed) entitled The Cages; and the Reading Rooms of their Lives. The new body of work featured the Canadian artist’s signature portraits of women with painted and collaged comic book facial overlays with some of the pieces featuring a physically removable “mask” of superheroes. When these covers are lifted, the emotions and fragility of the human underneath are revealed. Chevrier further explains – “In the greater body of my work, the images used within the ‘cages’ series range from […]

Releases: Rostarr x Nike Running Collection

Nike recently released their collaboration with Romon Kimin Yang (Rostarr) featuring his calligraphy-inspired imagery on a selection of running footwear and apparel. While working with the company on the design of the collection, the New York-based artist was inspired by run crew culture and marathons leading him to embed abstract runners into his pattern of brushstrokes. He further explains – “This project is about isolating the energy that happens when you run with a big group of people. I tried to capture the rhythm and feeling of movement created when […]

Upcoming: Natalia Fabia – “Rainbeau Samsara” @ Corey Helford Gallery

On November 5th, Natalia Fabia (interviewed) will be opening a new show at Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles, her first solo in four years. Entitled Rainbeau Samsara, the spelling seemingly a reference partially to her daughter, much of the new work we have seen brings her fashionable subjects into the natural world and “explores sequential cycles of life, known in Sanskrit as Samsara.” The locally-based painter often stages photoshoots of her friends which she uses for reference, sprinkling in some sparkles, shiny things, candy colored landscapes, unicorns, a burlesque style and other favorite […]

Streets: Leon Keer // ONO’U (Tahiti)

Earlier his month, Leon Keer contributed another one of his signature anamorphic street paintings to the ONO’U street art festival in Tahiti. Painted at the lookout of the Gare Maritime Ferry Terminal in Papeete, the piece features a parade of robots ready to explore the beautiful island after exiting their cruise ship. As you can see, his three-dimensional skills are quite impressive, creating an optical illusion that the island residents would not soon forget. Releases: Mark Drew – “Deez Nuts” Prints

One of Australian artist and graphic designer Mark Drew’s most popular series of works are his genius mashups of the Peanuts comics and 90s rap. These paintings collectively entitled Deez Nuts were originally covered by us in 2013 when he had a showing at his China Heights Gallery in Sydney. For those who missed it, some of these images featuring some classic hip hop phrases and Schulz’ iconic characters are available as prints here. Discuss Mark Drew here.
