Showing: Rodrigo Branco – “Efígie” @ Homegrown Galeria

We have been following Rodrigo Branco for a while now, and after seeing him paint a lovely portrait mural in the Swiss alps recently (covered), it’s great to see him having a solo show at Homegrown Galeria in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Opened on 8th of October, Efígie (effigy) includes seven signature portrait pieces created for this show using mixed mediums such a acrylic and spray paint on canvas. This series is an ode to times passed when portraits and busts represented the soul of the person. Both expressive and almost abstract […]

Art Focus: Parasite

Parasite’s series of Black Things paintings utilize found & existing paintings and prints as a canvas where traditional works are over-painted with brutal new geometries. The original context of the source paintings are changed and subverted with distorted volumes and masses of ‘anti-image’ to create a new vocabulary. Portions of the original image are retained by the Poland-based artist as he plays with our sense of perception – depth and dimension present a renewed allegory that emphasizes unfamiliar details within the framing of the existing image. Equally, his outdoor […]

Previews: “Second Nature” @ Hashimoto Contemporary

Hashimoto Contemporary‘s November exhibition looks to be a promising show featuring work from four Bay Area artists Bessma Khalaf, Jacqueline Norheim, Steuart Pittman (pictured above) and Dan Swindel. Second Nature is a departure from some of Hashimoto’s previous programming and looks to be an exciting step for the San Francisco space. Painting, sculpture and photography collide with video installation in this healthy mix of practices, thematically linked by the collective experiences of our surroundings expressed through a variety of media. We’re particularly keen on Swindel’s […]

Neo Geo is a two-person exhibition featuring Carl Cashman and Liam Snootle in the gallery 1 space, along with BlackThings, is a solo exhibition by Parasite in gallery 2. For this show, Cashman created a new body of work in two parts – one is a further exploration of his geo-based concepts, this time mixing abstract backgrounds and geometrical shapes and patterns, with the other playing with […]

Previews: Ryan McGinley – “Winter” @ Team Gallery (New York)

Tomorrow night in New York, Ryan McGinley will be opening a new solo entitled Winter at Team Gallery’s Soho location. Continuing his series of road trip photo shoots with friends, these new images feature nude figures in upstate New York during the the dead of cold season requiring a mixture of audacity and sacrifice from the participants. The vulnerable forms juxtaposed again frozen and barren landscapes leads to a certain sadness, something that is different than the summer trips he has documented in the past. The exhibition […]

Half a year since his last show with Todd James at V1 gallery in Copenhagen (covered), Barry McGee will opening a China Boo at Ratio 3 in San Francisco. […]
