Preview / Installation: Jim Houser – “The Homebody” @ Subliminal Projects

Philadelphia based artist Jim Houser is opening up a solo show Saturday night, July 10th, at the gallery that OBEY built – Subliminal Projects. As you can see, Houser is already hard at work setting up multiple installations throughout different rooms in the Echo Park space. Expect the new body of work entitled “The Homeboy” to include paintings of the usual whimsical characters, patchworks of symbolism & poetic code words, and mixed media works.  Also, for the first time, Houser will be releasing his soundtrack […]

Openings: StolenSpace Summer Group Show

AM got to the opening of StolenSpace’s annual Summer Group Show last week to find a line of people queuing out of the door! A packed house came out to see what we found to be a very strong grouping of work from an interesting mix of artists, some old StolenSpace favorites, but a lot fresh names – some new to the gallery, and some new to the London scene. Chloe Early is one of our favorite painters from the StolenSpace roster, and her new […]

Releases: Josh Keyes – “Last Kiss” Print

Every Josh Keyes fan knows how difficult it is to acquire a piece of his work, even his prints. All three of the prints released as part of “Fragment” (covered), Keyes’ January show at Jonathan LeVine Gallery, were small editions of 50 and not surprisingly sold out instantly to collectors on the show’s long waiting list. Well, after many months, David B. Smith Gallery will soon give people a better chance of acquiring one of the more striking images from “Fragment.” At approximately 11 a.m. […]

Releases: Shepard Fairey Mr. Spray Vinyl Figure

Hot on the heals of his blowout solo in SoHo (covered), Shepard Fairey has announced that his Mr. Spray is finally being released, after we brought you a first look at the figure when we visited his studio in 2008. Mr. Spray, originally conceived of in 2004 as a 50’s-era advertising mascot, will be rendered in 3-dimensions by acclaimed vinyl toy masters, STRANGEco. Standing 11″ tall and fittingly bundled with a mini Andre the Giant stencil, the iconic character will be produced in four limited […]

Openings: “Shred” @ Perry Rubenstein

“Shred,” an exhibition curated by New York downtown art critic and Paper magazine editor Carlo McCormick, opened last Thursday night at Chelsea’s Perry Rubenstein Gallery. As the name implies, the show features collage-based art from a diverse group of artists, including Dash Snow, Elbow-Toe (interviewed), FAILE (featured), Shepard Fairey (featured), Mark Flood, Erik Foss, Swoon (interviewed) and Judith Supine. McCormick stretches the definition of “collage” to include mixed-media pieces and video/animation, which allows for a diverse body of work, and most likely, a more interesting […]

Openings: Michael De Feo – “Mining for Splinters and Diamonds” @ No Borders Art

Ever the gentleman, Michael De Feo brought a whole bunch of flowers as a gift to the attendees at his solo show in Hong Kong last week including some live painting. “Mining for Splinters and Diamonds” (previewed) brought a selection of abstract and figurative mixed media pieces to  No Borders Art, and AM was there to check out the work. Michael got busy decorating the gallery space with a series of his iconic flowers, set against the backdrop of the new portrait paintings on display […]

Openings: Lucy McLauchlan – “Together…” @ Lazarides

Lucy McLauchlan’s latest solo show “Together…” is currently gracing the walls of the Rathbone Place gallery of Lazarides, and last week AM went along to the opening night to see the new body of work. McLauchlan has put together some intriguing installations around her work in the past and this element was probably the part of the show we were looking forward to seeing the most. Lucy brought a collection of junk items to the gallery comprising of paint cans, cassette tapes, discarded bottles and […]

George Condo x Kanye West Cover Art

We had mentioned previously that an artist we were impressed with from this year’s Art Basel – Switzerland, George Condo, had recently worked with Kanye West on the cover art of his new single “Power.” Here is the actual image that shows the decapitated head of a big-mouthed rapper with a sword through it, perhaps a nod at some self-awareness. Another image (seen after the jump) rumored to be the actual future album cover takes this even further showing Kanye with four mouths.
