Openings: Art Hong Kong 2009 International Art Fair

Continuing AM’s tour of Hong Kong, we made a stop at the Art Hong Kong International Art Fair. This vanguard Asian fair brings together top notch exhibitors from over 110 galleries. Much like our visits toÂ Basel Miami and Armory NYC, in Hong Kong we experienced and saw work from some of theÂ best talents in the art world. Jeff Soto (interviewed) opened his UK solo show to a packed house at StolenSpace yesterday. Sotoâ€™s arrival in London had certainly stirred up lots of fans eager to meet him and see his work in person for the first time. Last night, AM was lucky enough to be on hand to experience Jose Parla’s latest body of work Reading Through Seeing (previewed) which opened in Hong Kong at Oos Botos Gallery. Parla’s much anticipated return to Asia didn’t disappoint as he produced a gorgeous body of work on a variety of mediums: canvas, wood, ceramic and paper. A little while back, we gave you a glimpse of a laser cut brooch that was to be released from Audrey Kawasaki (interviewed).Â Well, it appears that some were sold at her Space Yui show in Japan and one, much to Audrey’s displeasure, has even made its way onto eBay. AM spent some more time with Jeff Soto (interviewed) as he was preparing for his upcoming solo at StolenSpace (previewed) this week. Street Art Shows Strong @ Sotheby’s Contemporary Day Auction

We heard a rumor that the economy is not well and the art market is hurting. Apparently, the folks attending Sothebyâ€™s Contemporary Day auction donâ€™t agree. Today’s sale yielded solid results, with 337 lots pulling in over 21.5 million USD. Among the amazing lineup of artists, such as Warhol, Basquiat, Kippenberger and Cy Twombly, AM noted the inclusion of two iconic names from the “Urban Art” genre: Shepard Fairey and Banksy. Jeff Soto makes his United Kingdom debut this week with his solo show entitled “The Inland Empire” (teased) opening Thursday, May 14th, at Stolenspace. AM caught up with Soto ahead of the show to try and understand how the show came together, the symbolism and meaning behind his new work and how fatherhood has changed his career as an artist. AM stopped by for an early look at the new limited edition Jeff Soto will be releasing named “Inland Empire” – a 5 color hand-pulled screen print.Â Soto’s similarily named show “Inland Empire” (teased) is set to open this weekend at StolenSpace. Tunnel 228 Theatre x Art Show by Kevin Spacey

The vaults under Waterloo Station have been taken over by artistic director Kevin Spacey and his team from the Old Vic Theatre for their latest venture: Tunnel 228.Â A very cool “pop up” art show and theatre experience that seems to have come out of nowhere.
