Openings: Art Hong Kong 2009 International Art Fair

Continuing AM’s tour of Hong Kong, we made a stop at the Art Hong Kong International Art Fair. This vanguard Asian fair brings together top notch exhibitors from over 110 galleries. Much like our visits to Basel Miami and Armory NYC, in Hong Kong we experienced and saw work from some of the best talents in the art world. It was exciting to have such a collection of premium artwork centralized in one place. Check out all our exclusive coverage after the jump.

Openings: Jeff Soto – “Inland Empire” @ StolenSpace

Jeff Soto (interviewed) opened his UK solo show to a packed house at StolenSpace yesterday. Soto’s arrival in London had certainly stirred up lots of fans eager to meet him and see his work in person for the first time. AM was on hand to take some shots and spoke to people who had traveled from all across the UK to be there. They were rewarded with a strong, cohesive set of paintings, ranging from small to huge in size, with the largest measuring 5′ […]

Openings: Jose Parla – “Reading Through Seeing” @ Ooi Botos Gallery (Hong Kong)

Last night, AM was lucky enough to be on hand to experience Jose Parla’s latest body of work Reading Through Seeing (previewed) which opened in Hong Kong at Oos Botos Gallery. Parla’s much anticipated return to Asia didn’t disappoint as he produced a gorgeous body of work on a variety of mediums: canvas, wood, ceramic and paper. Parla blurs the line between contemporary and urban art through a hybrid technique derived from his signature calligraphic style and gritty street influence. Many of Parla’s pieces reflect […]

Update: Audrey Kawasaki’s Laser Cut Brooch

A little while back, we gave you a glimpse of a laser cut brooch that was to be released from Audrey Kawasaki (interviewed).  Well, it appears that some were sold at her Space Yui show in Japan and one, much to Audrey’s displeasure, has even made its way onto eBay. What is even more disturbing is the fact that the auction lists the brooch as being sold out when in fact this item is not even limited in edition and will be released for $35 […]

Streets: Jeff Soto in London (Part 1)

AM spent some more time with Jeff Soto (interviewed) as he was preparing for his upcoming solo at StolenSpace (previewed) this week. We were on hand to take pictures of the first of his street pieces in London. Soto was a graffiti writer back in the day around the Los Angeles and Riverside area before he concentrated on his endeavors in the studio and hadn’t taken to the streets in almost 10 years. Based on the quality of this piece, we certainly think he should get […]

Street Art Shows Strong @ Sotheby’s Contemporary Day Auction

We heard a rumor that the economy is not well and the art market is hurting. Apparently, the folks attending Sotheby’s Contemporary Day auction don’t agree. Today’s sale yielded solid results, with 337 lots pulling in over 21.5 million USD. Among the amazing lineup of artists, such as Warhol, Basquiat, Kippenberger and Cy Twombly, AM noted the inclusion of two iconic names from the “Urban Art” genre: Shepard Fairey and Banksy. More after the jump…

Preview/Interviews: Jeff Soto – “The Inland Empire” @ Stolenspace (London)

AM caught up with Soto ahead of the show to try and understand how the show came together, the symbolism and meaning behind his new work and how fatherhood has changed his career as an artist. Read the entire interview and see some sneak peeks of the work after the jump. Note: The interview contains use of strong language.

Video: Damien Hirst – “Requiem” Kiev Exhibition

Here is an insightful video about Damien Hirst’s “Requiem” exhibition in Kiev demonstrating how his spin paintings are created as well as touching on topics such as his support charity and themes in his work. More importantly, we get a moving glimpse at his biggest show yet.  Also, check out some photos from the exhibition that we posted previously here. Discuss Damien Hirst here.

Tunnel 228 Theatre x Art Show by Kevin Spacey

The vaults under Waterloo Station have been taken over by artistic director Kevin Spacey and his team from the Old Vic Theatre for their latest venture: Tunnel 228. A very cool “pop up” art show and theatre experience that seems to have come out of nowhere. Via a mysterious website which poses as a legit business, people can get free tickets to the event via a hidden link that allows the visitor to participate in the project. The show includes work by ATMA, Mark Jenkins, Antony […]
