Openings: Shawn Barber – “Tattooed Portraits: Snapshots” @ Shooting Gallery

Shawn Barber’s latest solo show, “Tattooed Portraits: Snapshots,” (setup) opened up last weekend at San Francisco’s Shooting Gallery. Featuring a full body of fresh work, Shawn’s use of modern tattooed subjects (who range from Modern Body Art’s Jo Harrison and Blackheart’s Scott Sylvia and Jeff Rassier to MMA fighter/Seventh Son Tattoo’s Luke Stewart and comedian Margaret Cho) translates very well, showing a softer and sometimes even contemplative side of a culture often perceived in precisely the opposite light. The representation of a “lowbrow” art through a more […]

Saturday night, AM attended the opening of Joshua Liner Gallery’s summer group exhibition, which collects solid works from a very strong roster of artists, some of whom the gallery has shown previously and others of whom the gallery is working with for the first time. More after the jump…

Update: Camille Rose Garcia – “The Hydra of Babylon” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

Merry Karnowsky Gallery has just released an image from Camille Rose Garcia’s upcoming show that we first told you about here.  This painting which shares the same name as the title of exhibition, “The Hydra of Babylon,” measures an enormous 60″ x 84″ and depicts a Greek hydra (a nine-headed serpent) struggling underwater with an eagle.  This painting is definitely representative of the imagery for this show described as “animal symbolism borrowed from Greek mythology and inspired by intricate islamic patterning.” The show opens September […]
