Releases: Tomokazu Matsuyama Book

Some of our lucky readers in Japan have already seen this limited edition book about Tomokazu “Matsu” Matsuyams’s (interviewed) career and artwork. The book was initially released regionally in Japan this past January, but now, this amazing book has finally made its way to the United States. The hardcover from Panorama publishing covers the past 5 years of Matsu’s career and is written in duo languages (English/Japanese) by curators from the Andy Warhol Museum, NYU and Tokyo. Is it just us or is it a little ironic that Damien Hirst is showing at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, especially since included is one of his famous formaldehyde shark tanks (although this current specimen, a great white was apparently already dead, unlike the tiger shark that rocketed him to fame in 1992)? AM was lucky enough to be able to attend the Los Angeles premiere of Banksy’s “Exit Through The Gift Shop” earlier tonight at the historic Los Angeles Theatre. With the art community on high alert, the cavernous and exquisitely beautiful theater was filled (at least the first floor) with collectors, celebrities, pseudocelebrities, and knowledgeable street art fans. Charming Baker has got things set for his solo debut in New York city at New York Studio Gallery in the Lower East Side. The show, “Stupid has a new Hero”, looks to showcase more of Charming’s brush work with his abrasively interesting subject matter. It opens up May 14th and runs only two weeks. As we suspected, Banksy wasn’t done with Los Angeles after the first stencil (security guard with Koons dog) he put up yesterday. Seen above is a newly discovered piece in downtown LA that is raising expectations for the special premiere of his documentary tonight in a secret location. As mentioned in our preview, Amanda Visell’s exhibition, “Primeval Love” opened last Friday at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles. Because of the vintage feel to her paintings and the imagery she decided to work with, the show blended in perfectly with the surroundings. In fact, as you can see from the photo above, this was definitely one of most unique and eye-catching settings we have seen for an exhibition in a while. More images after the jump…

As his upcoming show at NYC’s Joshua Liner gallery quickly approaches in just a couple weeks, Shawn Barber (featured) recently sat down with AM for a quick discussion on the art of getting, giving and painting tattoos. Known primarily for his sittings with tattoo legends and artists, Shawn’s latest exposition, “Tattooed Portraits: Chronicle” looks to be no less than the stellar work we’ve come to expect, as evidenced by the teaser images he’s sent our way. After Todd “REAS” James opened his show in Paris last year and New York early this year, he turned his attention to Miami where he went to town on OHWOW’s Bar location. As one of the group artists who will be doing new installs approximately every 2 months, REAS certainly left his mark last month by painting all his classic imagery on all the available wall space. Dale Grimshaw’s vibrant paintings were on full display last Friday when his new show opened at the Signal Gallery in London. His new series of works, “Arcana”, centered around the characters of a deck of tarot cards such as “The Fool”, “The Eight of Swords” and “Judgement” seen from left to right in the photo above.
