February rolls to a stop this weekend before the big NYC art machine cranks into high gear next week for the big Armory show and the surrounding satellite fairs. Jonathan LeVine Gallery will be holding their Five Year Anniversary Group Exhibition this Saturday with many of the artists that we have grown to love over the last half decade. Of course, the show boasts a stellar list of artists including Jeff Soto, James Jean, Andy Kehoe, Mark Dean Veca, Adam Wallacavage, Erik Sandberg, and Ray Caesar. While wandering around Chelsea, we happened upon “The Birthday Party,” a fun show at ClampArt by New York-based artist Scott Daniel Ellison. We were not familiar with Ellison’s work but were immediately intrigued by the groupings of small illustrative paintings – dark yet humorous – with a painting style reminiscent of Marcel Dzama’s earlier painting style, but perhaps more expressionistic. Releases: Tomokazu Matsuyama x Medicom Bearbrick

Recently, we stopped by Tomokazu “Matsu” Matsuyama’s (interviewed) Brooklyn studio (here) and saw one of the coolest things he’s working on – a Bearbrick with famed toy makers Medicom on their next artist series release. Their last official design collab was 2 years ago with Kaws. The bearbrick is customized with a special pattern created by Matsu. It will come in a set that has both a 400% and 100% bearbrick. We recently stopped by Kevin Cyr’s Brooklyn studio to check out his latest body of work slated for his two-person show with Jessica Hess entitled “Temporal Spaces,” which was curated by Lainya Magana and opens at San Francisco’s White Walls March 6. As Shepard Fairey’s retrospective museum show “Supply and Demand” landed in Cincinnati this past week for the final stop of the tour, AM was on hand to take part in all of the opening festivities! We at AM are already looking forward to Greg “Craola” Simkins (featured) solo show this summer after seeing a taste of what’s to come. Expected to fill both rooms of Joshua Liner gallery come June, we can only salivate thinking about the monster body of work that Greg is working. Yoshitaka Amano’s “Deva Loka : Los Angeles” show (previewed) opened this past weekend at LeBasse Projects. Not surprisingly, the cosplay (also seen here & here) fans were out in full force for the japanese artist who is famous for his work in Vampire Hunter D and the Final Fantasy video games. To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the death of Keith Haring, the Tony Shafrazi Gallery recently opened a gallery-wide tribute to the graffiti legend and 80s New York art superstar. The show contains iconic paintings, drawings and sculptures with Haring’s bold lines and energetic characters. See all the images from the show, after the jump.
