Teaser: Korin Faught – “Echo” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Los Angeles artist Korin Faught’s second show at Corey Helford Gallery entitled “Echo” opens on June 27th.  Faught first came to our attention when we saw a haunting series of paintings that she describes as “…inspired by Puritan, Amish and other Christian fundamentalists.”  So, this new body of work came as somewhat of a surprise as she does not shy away from a more honest look at the human form. Still, we see Faught’s distinctive palette and style in these first glimpses of the show […]

Video: Patti Astor’s “Fun!” Documentary Trailer

AM just found out that Patti Astor (the legendary founder of NYC’s FUN GALLERY) is hard at work on a feature documentary about the early days of the NYC scene. Best known to you as the blond reporter in “Wild Style,” the doc tells the story of the first art gallery in NY’s East Village and the convergence of rappers, breakdancers, graffiti artists and indie filmmakers who contributed to the birth of the hip hop aesthetic. Patti was one of the first curators to show […]

Upcoming: Aperture Foundation’s “Some Like It Hot Summer Party” (NYC)

The Aperture Foundation (a nonprofit foundation dedicated to promoting photography – Ansel Adams was one of the founders) is having its first annual Some LIke It Hot Summer Party on June 18.  The great news for collectors is that with a $150 ticket to the event, you will receive a Thomas Allen digital C-print (pictured above) created exclusively for the event.  The print is in an 8×10″ edition of 250 presented in an archival paper folder. Even if you can not make the party (you […]

Close-Up: Banksy’s Studio Installation @ Bristol Museum

In our last article, AM showed you some great pictures of Banksy’s latest show in Bristol from the special preview night. Sir Banksy demonstrated that he could create a show that seamlessly weaved his witty street-cred with the pompous realm of high-society. Considering the limited time we had to enjoy the show, we went back on opening day to bring you a closer look at the mock-up of Banksy’s actual studio. Read on after the jump…

Openings: “Mood Swings” @ Carmichael Gallery

Opening alongside Know Hope (covered) at Carmichael Gallery was “Mood Swings,” a group show showcasing the work of seven urban artists: Asbestos, Bumblebee, Cena7, Fefe Talavera, Imminent Disaster, Labrona and Oddzoo. From the vibrant watercolor and ink pieces of Cena7, to the beautiful potraiture on found objects from Asbestos, or the gentle reminder from Bumblebee […]

Art Focus: Thomas Doyle x New York Times Magazine

An artist we recently fell in love with at the Culver City Artwalk, Thomas Doyle, was commissioned by the New York Times Magazine to create a sculpture for their “Infrastructure” issue. This issue, which hits newsstands today, focuses on architecture, a perfect fit for half of what Doyle does so well – create small scale replicas of different structures and buildings placed in terrariums. The other half of what he does well is what sets him apart from ordinary diorama makers – capturing human emotion […]

ARTWALK Culver City: Blum & Poe, Bradford Stewart, Kim Light / Lightbox, Kinsey/DesForges, Koplin Del Rio, LA Contemporary & LeBasse Projects

Rounding out our coverage of Culver City’s ARTWALK 2009, we bring you photos from the shows on display at Blum & Poe, Bradford Stewart, Kim Light / Lightbox, Kinsey/DesForges, Koplin Del Rio, LA Contemporary and LeBasse Projects. It was awesome to be able to visit so many galleries and see such a diverse range of great art all in one visit. The only thing we’d change? Culver City should make this a monthly event rather than an annual one. Enjoy the visuals after the jump.

Video: Date Farmers x N.A.S.A – “A Volta”

Coachella-based artist duo the Date Farmers collaborated with the N.A.S.A (North America South America) project on a music video that premiered earlier this week. Entitled “A Volta,” the video featuring Sizzla, Amanda Blank, Love Foxxx definitely had the Mexican-American vibe going with the Date Farmer’s iconic robots creating havoc.  Check out the behind the scenes details at Boing Boing. This video is the third of the series (we showed you the videos with Shepard Fairey and Marcel Dzama previously). Discuss the Date Farmers here. Check […]

Video/Creative Process: Invader @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

Invader will be having a solo show at Jonathan Levine Gallery at the end of June. Here’s a little video preview of his trademark “Rubickubism” process and a piece that will be at the show. The geometric complexity and attention to detail Invader utilizes to create his images is really fun to observe in this clip. Also, JLG has just relaunched their website. Not only does the new site showcase their current/future shows and feature their blog, but it also sports a new “backroom” section with selected works from a […]

The pieces in both galleries looked absolutely stunning, so be sure to check back for our full recap. More exclusive setup pictures after the jump.
