Streets: Shepard Fairey (Dallas)

Last week, Shepard Fairey (featured) brought the OBEY show to Dallas for a series of street murals at the request of the Dallas Contemporary. In conjunction with the project, the institution which is modeled after European kunsthalles or art centers also hosted PHENOMENON, a party with Shep providing the music as DJ Diabetic. Teaser: “Winter Group Show” @ White Walls

This Saturday night, February 11th, the White Walls Gallery in San Francisco will be opening their annual Winter Group Show. Openings: Matthew Bone, Soey Milk, Bonnie Reid, Christine Wu @ La Luz de Jesus

Last weekend, four artists presented a selection of their work at the La Luz de Jesus Gallery in Los Angeles. For this showing, Matthew Bone blended some elements of pop culture with his provocative imagery, Bonnie Reid explored the darker sides of childhood in her work, Christine Wu introduced flickering images of her characters in flux, while Soey Milk painted her ladies holding symbols of agony and pleasure. Videos: Murakami – “Ego” @ Qatar Museum

Previews: David LaChapelle – “Earth Laughs In Flowers” @ Fred Torres Collaborations

Coming up on February 23rd, New York’s Fred Torres Collaborations will unveil the Earth Laughs In Flowers series of photos from David LaChapelle for the first time in the United States. The ten large-scale still life photographs were inspired by Ralph Waldo Emerson’s poem Hamatreya in which flowers are a way in which nature expresses its hatred for human ignorance and their desire to control the earth. Openings / Interviews: Judy Chicago’s – “Sublime Environment” @ Art Los Angeles Contemporary

At this year’s Art Los Angeles Contemporary, visitors were greeted at the fair’s entrance with Judy Chicago’s dazzling performance installation, Sublime Environment. As part of Pacific Standard Time’s Performance and Public Art Festival, the large scale installation was created with 25 tons of dry ice, with help from the Silverlake non-profit, Materials & Applications, and a group of 40 volunteers. Releases: Jeremy Geddes – “Cluster” Print

Tomorrow, February 6th, Jeremy Geddes (interviewed) will be releasing his Cluster painting (destined for Jonathan LeVine at the end of the year) as a print. Update: Kate Mccgwire

It appears that the London-based Kate MccGwire has created some new work since her showing at All Visual Arts last April. For this series, the sculptor who utilizes feathers has enclosed her beautiful free-flowing forms in what look to be vintage cabinets. The pieces entitled Guile, Lure, Quell, Seer and Yearn feature carefully placed plumage from both MccGwire’s light and dark winged friends, transformed into emotion-evoking abstractions with her gifted hands.
