Streets / Video: ABOVE in Los Angeles

After a successful show at White Walls for Bay Area-based ABOVE (interviewed), the nomadic street artist decided to travel down to Southern Cali for a four-month long summer tour. Although not as exotic as many of the other locales he has visited in the name of art, Los Angeles seems to be a perfect spot for his newest project – a revival of his iconic arrow mobiles – this time with a Hollywood twist. Take a look at the many spots he hit up with […]

Video: Bender from Futurama as Invader

Just like the previous intersections of popular animated series and our art world (see Souther Salazar x Family Guy, Shepard Fairey x Family Guy, Shepard Fairey x South Park,  and Ron English x Simpsons), Futurama has now upped the ante with a clip of Bender running around putting up “street art” stylized after the tile work of Invader. Openings: “Brush Strokes” @ V1 Gallery

Last week, Copenhagen’s V1 gallery opened the stunning new show “Brush Strokes,” featuring the works of Todd James (aka REAS) and Lydia Fong (aka Barry McGee). According to the V1 site, the title of the exhibition is a reference to the humorous NYC public-access TV show. McGee filled the gallery with several large scale installations — a text-heavy cluster of new style panels, another of only geometrics and another framed photos and paper pieces — as well as several smaller works, while James contributed a […]

Openings: Natalia Fabia – “Fashionable Aftertaste Without End” @ Corey Helford Gallery

What do you get when you mix Natalia Fabia’s (interviewed) “Hooker DreamEscape” imagery with Lolita fashion, Domo-kun, kaiju, geishas and other Japanese cultural phenomena? The answer is her stunning new body of work – “Fashionable Aftertaste Without End”. The “East meets West” opening party on Saturday night at Corey Helford Gallery featured a 450 pound specialty chandelier, plenty of appropriately costumed guests, and of course incredibly detailed paintings full of life, color, and Kawaii. Photo set after the jump…

Releases: Steve Powers and Chiho Aoshima for Absolut Vodka

Our friends at the art collectors have posted some info and images of an interesting collaboration between Absolut Vodka and two of our favorite artists, Steve Powers (featured) and Chiho Aoshima. Each artist has designed two drink pitchers to accompany bottles of the Swedish beverage, released in different sizes depending on country. Absolut has a long history of collaborating with many artists in the past such as Warhol, Haring, and more recently – Asbestos. Check out an animated video and additional images of the Aoshima […]

Mural: Joe Sorren – “The Veridic Gardens of Effie Leroux” in Flagstaff, Arizona

Last year, AM had the pleasure of visiting artist Joe Sorren at his studio in Flagstaff – you can check out our pictures here. Whilst we were there, Joe gave us a tour of the town, and in particular an insider’s look at his mural, titled “The Veridic Gardens of Effie Leroux”, in downtown Heritage Square. Read on for further details and pictures after the jump.

Openings: Meggs – “King for a Day” @ Above Second

Last Friday night, Above Second Gallery in Hong Kong hosted “King for a Day” (previewed), a show by the Melbourne-based Meggs. Because of the close timing of a concurrent body of work opening in Australia last week, he decided to name both shows the same, both dealing with “exploration of dualities and opposites that uses pop-culture references and symbolism to represent status, power, death and innocence in a kind of abstract and mashed up way.” The collection of paintings and prints with imagery obviously influenced […]

Openings: Matt Haber – “The Little Voyageurs” @ The Bldg

We brought you a few teaser pics of Matt Haber’s “The Little Voyageurs” coming together at The Bldg in Covington, Kentucky a week or so ago, and since Matt got home to Brooklyn, he sent us some flicks of the work from the show. This exhibition is the largest collection of work that Haber has shown to date, and his first solo since 2005, so we had been waiting a long time to see what Matt would bring with this body of work. AM loves […]

Openings: Pure Evil – “Strange Girls” @ Pure Evil Gallery

AM dropped in to the opening of Pure Evil’s new solo show last week at the Pure Evil Gallery, which was looking resplendent under it’s brand new gin-palace styled black and gold leaf signage. Gin & tonic was being served of course in this bastion of East London creativity, and Charley’s large scale “Strange Girls” decorated the space. It’s good to see PE’s work in his own gallery, and this exhibition signals a change in the direction his gallery work is taking. Taking a series […]
