Highlights: Recommended Openings For August 13-19

If you are in New York City this weekend, DO NOT MISS the amazing lineup of artists in Joshua Liner Gallery’s “Summer Group Show,” (previewed) many of whom are showing for the first time with Liner and debuting the goodness to come from upcoming shows. Some great shows going off this weekend, so get out and support your local art scene. Preview: Invader – “Low Fidelity” @ Lazarides (Rathbone Place)

Fresh off his show at Jonathan LeVine with WK Interact in June, Invader hits the gallery circuit again, this time at Lazarides – Rathbone Place. “Low Fidelity” opens this Friday, August 14th and will include sculptures, mosaics, drawings, a new series of Rubik classic album covers (his tribute to Michael Jackson seen above). If you haven’t had a chance to see his “rubikcubism” technique yet, check this video. See if you can guess some more of the album covers after the jump…

Fame Festival: Blu and David Ellis (Part II)

We told you at the beginning of the week that Blu and David Ellis were hard at work on their newest animated video in Grottaglie as part of their participation in FAME Fest (coverage here.) Additional images of the pair’s work have just been released. We mentioned previously that we were looking forward to the result of their partnership; these pictures certainly indicate that it is going to be something very, very special.

Streets: Aiko

Looks like last weekend in Brooklyn, Aiko put up a mural at the Williamsburg Music Center on Bedford Ave & South 5th.  Some of the classic imagery that was on display at her last solo at Joshua Liner Gallery was replicated nicely at this busy location.  Check out more of the images she posted up on her blog after the jump…

Releases: KAWS Gray 4FT Dissected Companion

AM has just received information on the release of KAWS‘ Gray 4FT Dissected Companion, the second in his series of towering, anatomically exposed vinyl creations. Not for the faint of heart or the spatially deprived, these monsters will be set loose at the end of the month to those lucky few OriginalFake account holders. Much like the original Brown version, this monochromatic colorway will most likely be in an edition of 100 and retail for approximately $6000US. No word yet on an unlikely official kawsone.com […]

Openings: “Beach Blanket Bingo” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

AM recently attended the festive opening of Jonathan LeVine Gallery’s summer group show, entitled Beach Blanket Bingo. Chilling and chatting by the inflatable palm oases with a cold Pabst Blue Ribbon was a fun way to appreciate works by the over thirty participating artists, including Matt Haber, Seonna Hong, Elbow Toe, Richard Colman and Ron English.
