Outsiders LA & 2009 lineup @ Lazarides

Who says the art market is having a down year? Not Lazarides… We’ve got a sneak peek of the UK urban juggernaut’s 2009 lineup and it seems to be bringing the gusto. With solos planned with exciting artists such as Ian Francis, Antony Micallef, Conor Harrington, Blu, Invader, Vhils, Bast, and some surprises yet to be named, it seems that Laz is bringing some Red Bull to turbo-charge the scene. For the US market, Laz saved a little surprise as well. The “Outsiders” group show […]

Openings: Crash & Oliver Vernon @ Joshua Liner

AM had the chance to stop by Joshua Liner Gallery to check out two great shows: Unexpected Occurrences by Oliver Vernon and Unfinished Business by Crash (previewed). Both of these artists took us by surprise with their unique styles. Crash has long been regarded as one of the pioneers of graffiti art, but we noticed his works brought a mix of Lichtenstein meets the streets. His raw yet pop-y images leaped out to grab our attention as we passed by each painting.  Oliver Vernon had a very interesting mix of geometric conformity vs. […]

Marcel Dzama & Shepard Fairey x N.A.S.A.

Marcel Dzama recently collaborated with David Byrne on this video from N.A.S.A. featuring the track “The People Tree.” This isn’t Marcel’s first foray into the music field as he has done album cover work in the past for artists such as They Might Be Giants and Beck. If you remember, N.A.S.A. collaborated with Shepard Fairey on a previous music video “Money” (seen below). We wonder what other artists they have lined up for the future. Partially via Boing Boing thru TWBE. Check out other music […]

On the Streets: Blu x Swoon – Barcelona

Italian street artist extraordinaire Blu recently was invited to speak in Barcelona at the fifth annual “Influencers” festival hosted by the Center of Contemporary Culture (CCCB).  He was also commissioned to put up this fantastic mural of a giant shark made of money devouring old painted slogans as well as bearing down on a Swoon wheatpaste (although we are not sure if this was a collaboration). Blu’s presentation (video here – knowing Spanish/Italian may be helpful) was well received, as well as comical as he […]

Teaser: Hush “Hymn to Beauty” @ Carmichael Gallery

Hush has been a busy little artist since his last show in the UK (here). On March 5th, he’s going to “skip across the pond” and head straight to Hollywood for a solo at the Carmichael Gallery. We’ve been anxiously waiting to catch a glimpse of the urban sensation’s latest body of work “Hymn to Beauty” and got a hold of little gem: “Butterfly Girl – Siren“. Measuring a whooping 55 x 30 inches, we weren’t surprised to find out that it’s already been sold. Hopefully, […]

Valentine’s Day x Art

“But one of the attributes of love, like art, is to bring harmony and order out of chaos, to introduce meaning and affect where before there was none, to give rhythmic variations, highs and lows to a landscape that was previously flat.” – Molly Haskell Before heading off to enjoy your Valentine’s Day festivities, take a moment to get into the spirit of love with some art centered around this day of expression, after the jump.

Banksy @ Dreweatts’ “Urban Art”

Two original works by Banksy, “No Ball Games” and “Go Flock Yourself,” will be auctioned off on February 26th at the London flagship location of Selfridges when they host “Urban Art” in conjunction with auction house Dreweatts. Banksy collectors will surely be keeping a close eye on these two lots to see how prices hold up during this global economic crisis. “No Ball Games,” measuring 91 x 91.5 cm, carries an estimate of £30,000-60,000. The similarly sized “Go Flock Yourself” is estimated to fetch between […]

Publicity conspiracy? Shepard Fairey’s arrest a result of Boston politics?

Video of Shepard discussing the possible motives behind his arrest. When AM broke the news of Shepard Fairey’s arrest last week (here), we couldn’t help but ask the question: With warrants outstanding for weeks, how come Shepard was not arrested at City Hall while attending a very public unveiling with Boston Mayor Thomas Menino? We posed the question for you readers to ponder the motives*** and left the rest to Shep & his legal team. That is until Wooster Collective posted a very revealing article (here) through the […]
