Openings: Brad Downey @ Stolen Space

Last night, AM stopped by Stolen Space’s Dray Walk Gallery and saw a good turn out for the opening of Brad Downey’s “An Honest Thief” show which runs until the 8th of February. The show features a range of work using video installations, 3D sculptures, photographic prints, film projections, vandalized record covers, and even some cross stitch throw in for good measure! In this solo show, Brad continues to explore ways of manipulating and reclaiming the urban environment around us – often in humorous and […]

Preview/Setup: Shepard Fairey Retrospective @ ICA Boston

First, we showed you what the streets of Boston are starting to look like as Shepard Fairey’s retrospective at the ICA draws near (here). AM now brings you a glimpse of what’s going on inside the ICA as everyone is hustling to get things set up for the exhibition opening next week.  There seems to be a buzz flying around the show as the registrars busy are sorting through the intricate stencils and as the install crew unwrap the crates of ginormous works.  Even Shepard is […]

Preview/Interviews: Mark Dean Veca @ UAG – UCSD

One of the exhibitions we have been looking forward to this month is Mark Dean Veca’s “Paintings, Wall Drawings, and Collaborations” (teased) at the University Art Gallery at UC San Diego opening tomorrow, Jan 29th, 6 – 8:30 pm. His psychadelic and organic style is unique and has often been described as a mixture of pop culture imagery and 18th Century French “Toile de Jouy” style patterns. As relatively new fans of his, we were particularly interested in learning more about his work as this […]

Stephen Sprouse – Artist and Designer

The Louis Vuitton flagship store on 5th Avenue in New York City recently received the Stephen Sprouse treatment. The window displays feature neon light installations of Sprouse;s trademark Rose motif to showcase the launch of the brand’s Spring 2009 collection which pays homage to the late fashion designer and artist. Sprouse’s neon Day-Glo Roses really pop against the the subtle pattern of the location’s Takashi Murakami x Vuitton Multicolore wrap treatment (previously covered). Sprouse is best known for his Day-Glo bright, graffiti-printed, street influenced fashion […]

Openings: Know Hope @ Ad Hoc Art

Know Hope’s show (previewed) at Ad Hoc Art opened last weekend in NY to a pretty good crowd.  As with most of his shows, the centerpiece was an installation, vividly bringing to life the imagery of his art.  His well-known grappling and intertwined characters were again the stars in this body of work that seemed to have a seafaring theme. See more pics after the jump.

Andrew Schoultz & AJ Fosik @ Space 1026

Andrew Schoultz and AJ Fosik opened up a pretty amazing show full of complex installations last weekend at Space 1026 in Philadelphia. We have never really envisioned their work interacting but the kinetic energy of Schoultz’s frenzied imagery blends nicely with the sculpts of Fosik’s beasts and folklore – perhaps it’s the complementary color palettes. Not to mention, the cryptic letterings of Fosik combines with Schoultz’s penchant for incorporating the symbolism of U.S. currency to form a body of work that hints of conspiracies and […]

What caught our eye during the madness are the installation and works by on site artist Mike Murphy. He has more than a few significant pieces for this show and a crew of over 15 assistants working to get these beauties ready for the opening. Mike was gracious enough to give us a quick overview of the his major pieces. Continue reading after […]

Openings: James Jean “Kindling” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

Last night, Jonathan Levine hosted an exclusive friends and family viewing of James Jean’s Kindling. The Chelsea gallery was filled from the opening minutes with many New York art notables including: Susan Sarandon, Eric White, David Choe, Jonathan Viner, Esao Andrew, Travis Louie, and Molly Crabapple. The stunning show was a visual mix of abstract, illustrative, and an “east meets west” fusion of artistic ingenuity. With most pieces gobbled up before the doors even opened, there was little doubt in the minds of many that […]

Takashi Murakami Retrospective @ MMK Frankfurt

AM has brought a little holiday cheer straight from Europe.  Continuing with our coverage of Takashi Murakami’s show at the Museum für Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt, Germany (previewed here), we took some pictures of the amazing retrospective for the founder of the “superflat” art movement. Kaikai & Kiki animation video preview from the retrospective. The MMK has dedicated all three floors of its museum for the massive show of over 130 works containing various media – painting, sculpture, installation, and video. We can see that some timeless Murakami masterpieces […]
