POW! WOW! Hawaii ’16 / Showing: “Exploring The New Contemporary Movement” @ Honolulu Museum of Art School

Over the weekend, POW! WOW! Hawaii kicked off the festivities with a show curated by Thinkspace at the Honolulu Museum of Art School entitled Exploring The New Contemporary Movement, something they have done for the last two years before this (see 2015 & 2014). As in the past, artists were asked to contribute works that conform to a certain format, leading to a visually congruent and display of artworks. Releases: Yoskay Yamamoto – “Sunny Flower” Series

Several days ago, Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) released more iterations of his “Sunny Flower” series. The potted blooms are customized with the Los Angeles-based artist’s signature facial features and take inspiration from his job during college was delivering bouquets in Santa Barbara. Today at the Hudson River Museum, sculptor Thomas Doyle is opening a new show entitled If The Creek Don’t Rise. The first museum solo for the Westchester County-based artist will feature more of his signature miniatures that center on the suburban home and the families that occupy them, often threatened by chaos and calamity – known and unknown. Openings: Hajime Sorayama @ NANZUKA Gallery

Last weekend in Tokyo, renowned creator of the “sexy robot” Hajime Sorayama opened a solo show at NANZUKA Gallery. Streets: Javier Calleja (Genalguacil, Spain)

Genalguacil is a small town in southern Spain which has been involved in supporting and organizing art projects for the last 20 years. Slowly turning the town into an open space museum, the locals recently invited Javier Calleja from nearby Malaga to add his contribution to the collection. LA Art Show ’16: Recap

Last week, the LA Art Show was in town for another go around bringing in more than 120 galleries representing 22 countries. The 2016 edition was the 21st iteration of the fair, but third year for a special section of the event entitled Littletopia (see 2014, 2015).
