Basel Week Miami ’14: Aqua

Another fair we visited while in Miami was the tenth edition of Aqua. Featuring emerging and mid-career artists, the unique setting was a classic South Beach hotel that opened its rooms to collectors and exhibitors for the duration of Basel Week Miami. One of the pleasant surprises we stumbled upon was the piece seen above from Travis Louie (interviewed) that sees him using color for the first time in his signature series of works (exhibited by William Baczek). Showing: 2501 / Francesco Igory Deiana – “Involving Doubts” @ D406

Gallery D406 in Modena, Italy, opened a two man show by 2501 and Francesco Igory Deiana on November 22nd titled Involving Doubts. While sharing similar ideas, concepts and even elements of their visual languages, their abstract works are significantly different. It’s these similarities however that make their pieces work so well together, and it’s these crucial differences that make their styles complement each other. Both artist mostly work with black paint, have a strong focus on the line work and use just one other bright color […]

Basel Week Miami ’14 / Showing: Daniel Arsham – “Welcome to the Future” @ Locust Projects

Taking one of his most recognizable series of works to the next level, Daniel Arsham has created a site specific installation at Locust Projects coinciding with Basel Week Miami. Entitled Welcome to the Future, the excavation site created by the New York-based artist in the gallery’s floor holds thousands of what he calls “future relics,” objects of today’s time but made to look like calcified artifacts through his special technique. The fact that many of these are already obsolete (such as VHS rates, Walkmans, old school […]

Basel Week Miami ’14: Damien Hirst @ Paul Stolper Gallery

Mirroring an exhibition (covered) several months ago at the Paul Stolper Gallery in London was a display of Damien Hirst’s oversized pharmaceuticals at their Art Basel Miami booth. The Schizophrenogenesis works consist of sculptural renditions that are an extension of his pill cabinet pieces as well as his fascination with the medical field as well as screen prints. See all our coverage of Basel Week Miami here. Discuss Damien Hirst here.

Customs: Joe Ledbetter – Dissected Mutant Bunny

Ever since when he started in 2011, Joe Ledbetter has continually adding to his custom painted Mutant Bunny series (examples here, here, and here). The latest one we are sharing with you is a beautiful dissected version – check out more photos below… Discuss Joe Ledbetter here.

Recap: Sam Falls @ Eva Presenhuber (M Building – Miami)

As we gear up for the coming festivities of Art Basel Miami 2014, let’s look back at one of the impressive exhibitions held at the M Building by Galerie Eva Presenhuber during last year’s week of art madness. Artist Sam Falls had an excellent solo exhibition in which he showcased his multifaceted talents, ranging from his rope dye paintings and sculptures to his large scale lattice works that spanned the entire length of the M Building’s double height ceilings. It was an awesome display of […]

Recap: Kenny Scharf @ Pace Prints

Pace Prints recently unveiled an exhibition of fresh works by New York legend Kenny Scharf. The self-titled show consisted of unique silkscreen prints on which his signature cartoon-like faces were depicted three-dimensionally from painted and sculpted paper pulp. This new technique brings to life another aspect of his classic characters, who already exhibit vivid colors and wild emotions. And to add a little bling to the works, Scharf adorned each with Swarovski crystals in the smiles and eyes. An excellent direction to see from Mr. […]

First Look: Takashi Murakami – “In the Land of the Dead, Stepping on the Tail of a Rainbow” @ Gagosian

Incense filled the air as we visited the Takashi Murakami exhibition at Gagosian Gallery. This is the site of the artist’s first major exhibition in New York City since his monumental retrospective held at the Brooklyn Museum (covered) in 2007. Entitled In the Land of the Dead, Stepping on the Tail of a Rainbow, this great showcase took full advantage of the grand space of Gagosian’s 24th street location in Chelsea. Utilizing various signature techniques he’s accrued on his way to becoming a key international […]
